More Signs of Crazy Market

On the Escape Pre-Owned page, there's a 2019 Escape 19 for sale in Texas for $36,500 (US$). The Build Sheet shows the owner bought a basic unit, with no options except AC and some custom fabric. Back in 2019 he paid C$33,045 (Canadian), which at the 75% exchange rate at the time amounted to US$25,459.

It doesn't surprise me that he's asking some $11k over his buying price, because that's what Escape fans will pay these days. What does surprise me is that the current price, 2022 after the latest price rise, for his Build Sheet, is about US$34,800. So he's asking more for his three-year-old E19 than you would pay for a new one with the same specs!

Even more surprising, he'll probably get it. The reason, of course, is that the new one means a wait of maybe 18 months. The 2019 is already built, and if you need an Escape for this summer, you've got to pay the price.

The previous thread on this crazy market migrated to a discussion of classic car prices. Understandable, except the reason classic cars increase in value is because they aren't being built any more. Escapes are still being built, but just not fast enough to meet the demand!

Strange times.

I found a few points in this video interesting and it would be especially interesting to someone thinking of cancelling their Escape order and purchasing something else.

You have more patience than I have.

I think we've arrived at the point that yachting arrived at many years ago. "If you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it."

We are looking at replacing our 30 year old generator system here at the farm with a total Generac power solution. The rep told us the wait would be maybe 12 months and many $$$. Seems they cannot build them fast enough. Sounds familiar.

Woe are we

We moved in June, last year, and ordered a new couch that March, prior to the move. Nothing yet. I'm not sitting on the floor, but this is ridiculous to wait 1 year.....for a couch.

Your issue is prevelant. It may only get worse, or better.

Hah! Could be real, but could also be the Escape marketing department is now creating listings...

"Thanks for contacting us, but that trailer sold in the first 10 minutes."

I bought a new car 10 days ago. I could’ve bought a 6 months old certified pre-owned version for $5k more than the price of new. I was very tempted to do it because the wait for the new one was unknown (although maybe only as much as 8 weeks - and I wasn’t desperate). But the pre-owned model was black, and I knew I would not happy with that… It turned out the dealer found my car “in transit” and I waited only 2 days to get it. It was very similarly equipped to the one that was $5000 more. Weird.

Maybe it's time for me to offer my used socks for sale, at just 10% more than new!

Our dear neighbor is a Generac distributor, there is a serious backlog, due to supply chain and whenever there is a weather related incident. He always keeps them stocked because shortages occur every year.
Wouldnt want to live here in the boonies without a Generac! We have a 10KW…enough to power everything! The wait is worth it…and it was our best purchase..peace of mind.

Off-topic, but some years ago when I was thinking about a whole-house generator, I was told the best were Onan, Kohler, and last—Generac. I didn't buy one, and have no idea whether those ratings were valid then or now, but thought it worth mentioning that there are other brands. Seems like Generac has the market cornered in the public mind these days.

We bought ours 16 years ago…and it hasn’t let us down yet. Weekly start up test, change the oil once a year, battery when it gets low as with all batteries. As with anything nowadays, quality tends to change with time. They don’t make things like they use to!

Crazy times we live in where RV's are appreciating in price. Look at the upcoming lottery on Monday. The base price of the 19FT with a build date of 2021 is 20% less expensive than a current 2022 model. Would it be considered a smart investment to try to buy one of the inventory lottery builds at 2021 prices and then turnaround and sell it for a 20%-40% markup? A 2019 21 ft was just listed, the seller blacked out the base price?? Hmmm. When we spend our money, we're voting and I just can't bring myself to participate in the madness! Rant over.

Yes on your first question but I think it will be a user/owner. Who cares on the blacked out price? The market will determine if it sells or not... I think it will....probably sooner than later

The very essence of capitalism. Supply and demand will dictate the price, new or used. If and when I sell my trailer you can bet I will sell it for whatever a buyer is willing to pay. Right now it's worth more than I paid for it over 5 years ago.

Yep, 2016 buyers hit the exchange rate jackpot for sure- about 30% average discount Loonie- Dollar back then.

But the dollar is worth less. Since 20Jan21, a lot less.

Well, Mr Lynn, I guess you consider 2/10 of one percent a lot? According to xe.com currency converter, one US dollar was worth 1.27497 Canadian dollars on January 19, 2021 and one U.S. dollar today equals 1.2723006 Canadian dollars. Doesn’t seem like “a lot” to me.
