Mounting license plate on a 17

Hello folks,

We have finally received the permanent license plate for our 17A. I thought we’d receive a mini one, like on a motorcycle, but it’s the normal standard size. So when I hold it over the place to attach it, it’s big and its left edge will be sticking out by an inch into the wind while towing. Is this an issue? Do I need a special strong license plate holder? Should I ask the DMV if I can have a mini license plate? Any advice will be gratefully received.

On our 19 my plate stuck out too. I cracked off half of it twice and had to get a new one. About that time I sold a car just as the license ran out so I do not have to turn them in for a pro rated refund. I used the two old plates for backing on my third new plate and did not have any more trouble. When we got the 21 and sold the 19 I kept the old Honda car plates and they are backing on the 21 now. That was my Bohemie solution.
In the old motorcycle days I used a piece of 1/8 Masonite for backing. That worked too. That was on the “small” plate.

Cheers Dave. That sounds sensible. Since we don’t have any spare old plates I’m sure we can find a stiff little piece of sheet metal for a backing to do that fix.
