Like so many have done I wanted to remake the stairs to the bed which included opening the top step. I chose to put a bottom in the top step rather than leaving it open to the floor. I also chose to hinge the riser for the 2nd step to make it easier to get things in and out of the space under the steps by basically removing the vertical piece that made up the back of the box for the first step/riser for the 2nd step and cutting it roughly in half and installing a hinge. As you can see I made the first step longer and completely open. I made this choice so it would be someplace to kick off our shoes rather than congregating in front of the door. Last fall when I expanded the front storage area above the propane tanks I debated insulating between the 1 x 2 framing and decided to do it. The result was I had insulation left over so I went ahead and put a large piece almost the full back of the storage space. I say almost because there's about a 2" step in the back wall on the right side that is 1" deep. The insulation was 3/4" and I put a piece of maple paneling over it so now it's flush with the jog in the wall on the right side.
The project was also a little bitter sweet as the maple paneling and treads were pieces of wood I have saved for an unknown project that my father had given me probably 30 years ago. So dad will be with me camping.

Oh and Kosta if you are listing, a time and money saving suggestion is about the carpet on the steps, I would only be slightly exaggerating to say 100+ staples were used on each step to secure the carpet down. My guess is you could get by with a at least 50% fewer staples and time. Might not save much, but holy macaroni there were lots of staples.

Thanks Alan, carpentry is not my day job and holy cow it really drove home to me in looking at what other folks have done there is some real talent in this group. I hope I didn't embarrass myself.

Really well done, Jeremy, and I think the way you opened up that second step to be able to stow larger objects in that space is really ingenious, I haven't seen that done before.
Thanks David, speaking of ingenious, I'm really hoping to get to your back curtains idea sooner than later. Thanks again. I couldn't have done this without help from a neighbor and those that went before me.
