Range Cover/Back Splash/Cutting Board
I thought you'd like to see the range cover I just completed. It is a frame with a cutting board fitted. The hope is to give a little more counter space in our 19. When cooking it should double as a back splash as shown.
A small project but it came out well. If anyone wants dimensions or more description let me know.
Thanks.

I don't want your dimensions. I want your cutting board/cover itself. First class!

If you added a white off-the-shelf plastic cutting board, watch for any melting from cooking near it. Those are made of UHMW plastic which has a very low melting point. If you set a hot pan on it you will have a melted circle.

A good point about the plastic. You could always get a custom sized one made of Richlite. Looks like wood and is temp resistant to 350F. Although, in Currin's case I like the white because it matches the white counter trim and appliances so well.

Hugh,
Great job. My first response is the same as Karen's: I'll take it.
But, method, materials, approx. dimensions would be a good thing, for many here on the forum.
Thanks.

Spendy material! I make the cover out of white ABS; then one can attach their own cutting board to the back side. Works also as a serving tray for outside use.

Karen, Ruthe, Paul: Thanks. This was my first attempt at box joints and it came out well. The pictures don't show many of the faults seen in real life, but I'm still happy with it.
Charlie & rbryan4: Didn't realize the cutting board was in danger. If we're careful it should be OK. We have a sink cover in our Shasta of the same material and haven't had problems yet. If it dies it'd be easy to put a new cutting board on. The Richlite would work well but at $65 a little rich for my blood. They will cut custom sizes (they should at that price) but I suspect would baulk at my slightly non-square frame. I'll bet an oversized one could be routed to size though, like this one was.
Don & Teresa: Thinking about it the design is simple. The rectangular frame is 18 1/16" x 13 1/16" x 1 3/4" inside dimensions. The boards are 1/2" thick. Twelve pocket screws were put around the inside to hold the 1/2" cutting board on, Kreg pocket tool and 1" screws. Finally, the mounted cutting board was routed flush to the frame, then a slight top bevel routed. I used oak that had been ageing in the basement for 15 years. I routed the cutting board flush so it would stand up as a back splash. What took me the most time was leaning how to make box joints.
Charlie: I almost ordered one of your boxes for this, but decided to go with wood and a plactic/white cutting board. Yours does look nice and functional.
Thanks all.

Thanks, Hugh, for the info. ( Plus the rationale/justification for acquiring yet another tool. Yeah!)

That is one handsome board. Love the multi-colored wood used.

Thanks , we love the way Currinh's cover/cutting board blends in with the counter and white. Was wonedring if a stain was applied to the oak frame ?

dfandrews: I hear you. I'm no cabinet maker but also like to collect tools. As for the pocket jig, I have what they now call the Kreg Jig® R3. Not too expensive and extremely useful. I used it extensively in restoring our 1955 Shasta trailer. Highly recommended.
gabeck: That is one nice stove cover. It's good to hear it will work for a back splash. For the finish, I used one application of Watco Danish Oil in Golden Oak. Then two coats of Minwax Plyurethane, steel wool and tack cloth between and after coats. I wasn't trying to match the Escape interior and, to be honest, I haven't compared them yet. I just knew these work well and had them on hand. Awhile back "Ron in BC" suggested "Water based Varathane Diamond Woodfinish" as a good match.
Thanks.
