Escape will select only a few of the holes in the metal to hold it in place thus extra holes in the metal are not used.

Yes and bending the belly band around the corners, there can be a gap between the bottom edge and the shell. If you riveted there you'd pull the band in at an angle and it wouldn't look good. It's not noticeable unless you put your face against the shell and look up.

As far as rivets holding in f.g. goes, on the first boat that I built I used nutserts to fasten the base of the head to f.g. that had no rear access. I'd preferred to have through bolted it. If a person is seated while using it, highly recommended, while in heavy seas the forces on the head are quite large. A friend later bought the boat. All these years later the heads still there. Depends on the type of load and application but f.g. can hold fasteners just fine.
