On my hitch, I'm thinking I will drill a hole in the bottom part of the threads below the nut so I can pit a cotter pin through the shank to keep the nut from coming completely off the ball assembly. Of course I will also check the nut frequently.

I think the sort of forces that ripped that 1.5" nut off the 1" shank would instantly shear most any sort of cotter pin.

It appears to me that the bottom portion of the threads are still in good shape and the nut simply loosened, damaged the threads, elongated the hole in the receiver, then the nut loosened to the point it fell off the still good threads. While the threads on the nut could have ripped out, I think the shaft would show more damage. Sure would like to see the nut to check it out. I know that its somewhere on the road so we will never know for sure. I know the cotter pin would never hold if the nut stripped out.

How about inserting a rolled pin, they would certainly hold.....but you would need a punch to get it out.

And at the old house, an aluminum frying pan which I ducked as it hit my Stanley steel replacement door. Bent the pan and as it rocked on the floor I picked it up I slurred “ oh look we’re part way to a new omelet pan.” And then the fight started! But I love her dearly. And deserved it no doubt.

is that a v6 jeep wrangler, or a v6 jeep grand cherokee, or what? whats its rated tow capacity, payload, and max tongue weight ?
I'd want to see a tow capacity of at least 5000 lbs, and 6000 lbs would give you better margins, 500-600 lbs tongue weight rating, and payload sufficient for you, your passenger(s), any cargo you carry in the tow vehicle, AND the actual tongue weight of the trailer (probably 450-550 lbs).

Excellent point. While essentially all Fiat Chrysler vehicles in North America with a gas V6 use the same engine, there is a lot more to towing ability than the engine.
