Great River Road?

We are planning our summer escape from TX heat and plan to go up the Great River Road then East to Maine (possibly through Canada). We prefer BLM/COE/USFS campgrounds. Interested in history, architecture, and scenery.

Would be fun to meet up with other Escapes along the way.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Lot's of info here

go to www.wigrr.com. You can order a FREE travel & visitors guide to the Great River Road of Wisconsin. It includes maps, sights, etc. The link has other links of area county visitor info.

Search key word of Great River Road. There's probably tons of information available for other states along the way.

Those river towns are dang interesting. Some, stuck in time and shriveling up; others, vibrant, old and interesting.

It's a Big Muddy river. There's innumerable places beside it, along it's 2,340 miles of length. You are asking a BIG question.

I have Wisconsin/Iowa suggestions. PM me for them.

bon voyage

Blackhawk

If you go up the Wisconsin side North of prairie du Chien, you can stay at Blackhawk Corps
Of Engineers campground just north of DeSoto. There are two excellent restaurants at DeSoto. The campground is well managed, clean and quiet. There are sites in the mature hundred foot tall cottonwoods and in a more open area where your solar will get more direct sun but you can still enjoy some shade. There are some trains that go by but in your Escape you’ll barely hear them or the barges going by in the main channel either. A big Selection of liquor if you’re so inclined at Starks sports shop in Prairie du Chien. Incredible number of bald eagles in that area as well as shorebirds, wildlife, historical sites and nice people.
