I think that before my next trip I may buy an oil drain container from an auto parts store. I'd use it to drain a few gallons of gray water at a time and be able to take it to a dump station if necessary.
I use this 10 litre collapsible bucket. It is handy to have for lots of things and I find I use it a lot.

I have the collapsible bucket and agree that it is useful; that's what I used at Hells Canyon. But the gray water dump there was just a few yards away from my trailer. I thought the oil change container might hold more and be more transportable, as you can seal it up after the gray water drains into it then take it to a more remote dump station. I'll try one and see. But I'll keep the bucket with me in case it doesn't work out.

Grey dump

When I used one of these in an Ohio State Park it was open at the top without a cap. However it was along the road and not all that near the campsites. There was fresh water nearby so I rinsed my bucket and chased it all with fresh water. Did not smell at all when I used it. The practice of dumping near the campsites is indeed nasty. I’ve witnessed some pretty disappointed tent campers who either set up or started to set up where a previous occupant had disposed of grey water, dish pan water, food scraps etc. I call them occupants because they certainly aren’t campers.
