I'm confused, need some clarification if I have to remove my old RM8551 from my classic 19. Did that require any extra work to get it out through the door or not? If so, what was done?

Hi Myron,

It's no problem getting it out the door. I suspect that I took my fridge door off first, not a biggie.

I'd caution anyone considering taking out their fridge from that era to look down the roof vent as best you can or remove it and see if there's any mold to deal with. For quite a while ETI used bare mahogany plywood for the rear of the enclosure and it could grow a lot of mold under some circumstances. If there are signs of mold then the interior should be draped with poly to prevent contamination of the interior.

Good news. I'm seriously considering a NovaKool R3800 or an Isotherm Freelance Elegance 4.1 CuFt if I do have to replace the Dometic. Isotherm is more expensive but very popular in the boating industry. Either one would fit nicely.

The Norcold N2175 is a perfect fit and will go through the door with an inch to spare on eithe side. As a 12v compressor unit, it draws very little power, around 30 amp hours in a 24 hour period. If I am towing in full sun, the (lithium) batteries still read close to fully charged after 4 or 5 hours. And since it was installed in June, I have not had to adjust the “number of bars” even once because it was too cold (freezing produce and water) or too warm.

Carl-you replaced a Dometic RMD8555 6.7 cu. ft. right? The OP has an RM 8551 4.1 cu. ft.
