They're used in all the all-molded towable trailers that use propane refrigerators. I don't have a clue about other build types, since I know nothing about them.

Home type refrigerators are commonly used in big units. That does not mean that you could not find an absorption refrigerator in a bigger unit. Small fiberglass trailers tend to have the absorption ones, not limited to Escapes at all.

The main reason that many RVs use an absorption fridge isn't really size. There are plenty of small compressor type fridges. The reason is the power source.
If you want to power a fridge while camping where there's no electricity, you either have to run a compressor fridge off the trailer battery (which will discharge pretty rapidly), or run a generator, which is often loud or annoying, produces pollutants in the exhaust, and burns through gasoline requiring frequent refills.
The absorption cycle requires heat. You have an excellent and inexpensive source of non polluting and silent heat in a typical RV, via a propane burner.
Absorption fridges are common in RVs because it means you can power the refrigerator for a long time with a cheap and portable fuel source.
Note that most absorption fridges found in an RV, including the ones Escape uses, can be powered 3 ways: via DC (battery) power, AC (shore) power, or via propane. However, most people find, as we do, that the fridge cools slightly better using propane than it does via AC or DC power.
On a side note, there's a long running debate on a thread over at FGRV, concerning "all electric" trailers vs those with propane powered refrigerators, water heaters and furnaces. The bottom line in my opinion is that "all electric" limits your boondocking to short stays. Or, you have to camp with hookups only, or have a good amount of solar power, or run a generator. No extended boondocking, and no hot showers.
No thanks.

The truly aggravating part of this, is we know a possible solution is the "tropical" rated absorption refrigerator that seems to be available every where in the world EXCEPT North America. I'm not certain if it's even available in Mexico. Sigh.

To make matters worse Donna, if you analyze the cooling units on the "tropical" rated fridges, there appears to be little or no difference from the "normal" rated ones. The biggest difference is better insulation of the entire cabinet as well as the door. So selling a better insulated fridge is somehow a problem in North America, but not in Sydney? Mind boggling.

Hi: rbryan4... It boils down to the Mfg's laziness to change!!! I do know that RV fridge fires, and resulting law suits, have been at the root of the weak performance issue. The worlds largest fridge fire has just occurred... Very SAD!!! Alf
