Reinforced Walls
Does anyone know the weight penalty for reinforcing various walls in the 19'?

We were told that reinforcing the walls with 3/4 " plywood added approximately 25lbs per wall.

Thanks Jack. That doesn't sound like too much considering the added flexibility that reinforcing provides.

25 pounds per wall sounds like alot to me, just for the 'convenience' of being able to mount anything, anywhere. I'm thinking light is light and every lb counts.

There are other ways to mount things that you wish, in some circumstances we were able to access the other side of the wall and use a small piece of wood/ blocking on the other side
( ie - the pantry, inside cupboards) . Also there are wood strips pretty much along most corners. There is always the 3M way.. I would only do it if I thought it was absolutely necessary, not just for an - if I might need it.

Try to envision what those walls will look like with all those hooks and with stuff hanging on all those hooks. I've yet to see a picture of the Umbra hooks cluttered with hats, towels and jackets.
Then try to envision all your walls like that.

Ditto and it's not an all or nothing situation. There are horizontal strips of wood and you can tell where they are by running your hand up and down the wall or looking at some build photos. So it's quite possible to tell where the solid wood is located.
As mentioned, there are others ways to mount things. Since I follow Colin Chapman's design mantra of "adding lightness" that weight penalty seems quite severe.

Good, but don't go too far down the Chapman route - he thought that if a race car fell apart around the driver that was okay, as long as it was just after the finish line. Lotus owners can sympathize with this; Escape owners probably want more durability

I guess I am in the other camp because I had four walls reinforced and happy I did. It sure makes life easier for mounting heavier objects like TV bracket. One thing to remember you can pick and choose which walls you would like reinforce. If you only need one wall reinforced then just go with one.

I would think it a good idea to get one or two walls reinforced for hooks or shelves that are to have heavy duty use. Finding the vertical strips though that you mention, Ron, would be easy with a stud finder, I assume.

I'm with the "Mark camp." I had both dinette walls and both loft walls reinforced. I have NO idea what I may wish to mount or how heavy those items maybe... in the future. I think 100# is nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially when discussing a trailer that nearly weighs two tons when loaded for long term travel. YMMV

It's over 100 lbs. for a 4 x 8 x 3/4 treated .
Thinner will be lighter . but it will add up

When I order the four reinforced walls I was told by ETI that it was only adding a little over a hundred pounds totaled

I occasionally see owners refer to reinforcing walls by #. How do I know which wall is which number? Is there a schematic somewhere on the ETI website where the walls are numbered?

I'm almost sure that it's a lot less than 25 pounds per wall. Have you called Escape?

You can find the internal support framework by either looking closely for the 1/4 wide crown staples (use a flashlight) or by finding them with a good magnet. Note that the internal reinforcing plywood does NOT go all the way back to the outside shell; in my 21 closet (24 inches deep) the reinforcement plywood stopped about 3 inches from the skin. Basically they cut a straight line on both sides of the ply panel and got it as close to the outside curve as it would go. Don't assume the whole wall is plywood inside!

Ask ETI, or someone here, for the 21 Electrical Plan. It maps the AC, DC, TV, and the reinforceable walls by numbers. They come in pdf form.

Thanks Pailin. That's what I needed. I plan to reinforce the bathroom wall on the 21 so I can add a pull handle ( wooden) so my wife can grab and pull herself out. She has back issues. She is pretty mobile, but it would just make it easier for her. If mama ain't happy........
