Apple batteries are similar, in their bluetooth mouse and charger, batteries are placed with positive up and negative down with a little spring ball bearing keeping tension.

That almost looks like battery corrosion happening at the terminals....so the 1.5 batteries are in series to make 6 volts?

It appears to me your batteries are not inserted correctly. I always thought the spring went on the negative side, yours do not and that corrosion could be from leaking batteries, perhaps from not...
