Matagorda Madness

Hello Escapee's, is anyone planning on going to the 2021 Matagorda Madness rally? We made reservations early this year, and have enjoyed the CG in the past, but not during a rally.



Just curious about attendance. . .Matt

When is it? I’ll be down visiting my sister in Bay City first week or two of next February. I plan to visit my cousins in Palacios and was thinking of camping at the Brackenridge Campground on Lake Texana.

The Matagorda Madness rally is the first week of December; 1st to the 5th. It's really a very well kept park and nature center, at the end of the Colorado River where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico.


We live in Palacios, and visit the park a couple times a year. Brackenridge is a great location on Texana, though we prefer to stay at the texana park and campground on the opposite side hwy 111.

And here I thought the Colorado River emptied into the Gulf of California south of Yuma!? You can learn something new every day...!

With its headwaters near Lamesa TX it wanders across a lot of Texas before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. Accent on wanders. I'm not clear on where it starts being navigable in a kayak (a lot of it looks seasonal on the upper stretches) but it looks like it could be an interesting paddle to see parts of Texas one usually would not see.
