Best Source for Brake Job Parts for 5.0TA?

I'm going to service the brakes and bearings on our 2018 5.0TA. I've done a lot of brake jobs on cars and trucks, but never on a trailer. Can anyone point me to a manual or other reference source, what parts are required, and where to get them? Thanks.

most folks just swap the whole brake assembly, a pair of them is like $125 for the non-self adjusters or $180 for the self adjusters. that way you get a new plate, new shoes, new magnets, new springs, etc. you reuse your drums.

Thanks. So when I go looking for parts, how do I specify them? I know they're Dexter axles, but is there a model number or type?

Don't throw parts unnecessarily; there is a procedure to inspect.

Brakes

Each wheel brake set comes in its own box. So you’ll need two for the lefts side and
Two for the right. They are the 10 inch by 2.25 inch units. You will need some connectors for the wires, eight altogether. I like butt connectors with the heat shrink feature. Like grease, you can get these locally. You’ll want New seals when you service the bearings. Dexter makes these also. You’ll need 4. I’ll post some pictures. I use and ll/16 box end wrench on the 4 backing plate nuts or a 3/8 ratchet with 11/16 socket and extension.

Dexter seals

Brake sets. 026 left side 027 right side .
All machinery the left and right is as you stand behind the machine
EXCEPT! A manure spreader, nobody stands behind in of them

I’ve been doing drum type brakes and wheel bearing service for 60 years. I’ve only been telling the left and right joke for 45. Raining nicely here again today. Garden is looking great squash and peppers are starting to come on. Scapes have been removed from the garlic and the top 6-8 inches of the plants are turning brown. Apples are about an inch and a half. An especially heavy crop on the State Fair variety

So how do you tell if the magnets should be replaced?

if they look ground down. my experience is, they last about as long as the brake shoes.

IMHO, its cheaper to replace everything once then do the job over and over, unless your time is worthless.

To your question Best Source; for the rear seals it is hard to beat these. Have ordered three sets over the last 8 years and have always worked great:

Bought these 2 years ago today for $96- now they're $150.
Right hand side: https://shop.redneck-trailer.com/p-5...-eb01-108.aspx

Left hand side: Redline 10in 3.5K LH Elec Self-Adj Drum Brake EB01-107-Redline 10in 3.5K LH Elec Self-Adj Drum Brake EB01-107

Maybe part of the price increase reflects Dexter having swallowed up Redline.

For the Hubs: I mean if your going to use new backing plates you either have your existing hubs machined or get new. Bought these 2 years ago @ $48/ea. Now they're $74.

Unless your trailer has unusually high mileage I would expect a 2018 to have significant life left in the brakes. I think an inspection and cleaning are in order, but probably not new shoes and magnets.

For the inspection, the shoes are ok down to 1/16” of material left. They typically start with 3/16”. The magnets typically have 4 small holes drilled partway into to them around the perimeter of the face as wear indicators.

As others have responded, it is easiest to replace the whole backing plate assembly at once. Etrailer.com has a house brand that is half the cost of dexter and has good reviews. It is also self adjusting.

I would buy etrailer house brand next time. It's not like buy the better brake pads for your Toyota. Dexter parts are not worth the price IMO.
