One more…from our “Out in the Middle of Nowhere Nevada” trip earlier this month….one night’s off-grid camp spot.

In photo #4, that rock formation appearing above the vehicle's hood looks mighty strange. What can you tell us about it? Looks like a wedge shaped boulder sitting sideways on top of the other outcroppings.

Is this still in Nevada? What part?

Mike, the rock is known as Elephant Head Rock located in the Sheepshead Mountains just south of the Blackrock Playa (where Burning Man is held).

In our most rigorous outing yet, with our heavily modified Escape 15A in tow behind our custom Toyota LandCruiser into very remote, high elevation & incredibly rugged Nevada mountain ranges the past 5-days, the 15A passed with flying colors.

And yes, sometimes it did seem to be flying in the rearview mirror....

Nevada is a favorite place of mine. Have followed wanderhussy on YouTube? She goes to a lot of remote Nevada areas esp with hot springs, plus she’s a hoot.

Hello Dan
Did you see any Bobcats on your outing. There are some real pretty ones out there. Nice pictures, thanks for sharing.

Dave, no we didn't see any Bobcats or Mountain Lions on this trip. Wild horses and Burros, though, were in abundance.

Aside, we typically see Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Bighorn sheep and sometimes Elk in these areas but not this time. Didn't even see any 'sign' of them either.

But, star gazing was incredible with crystal clear skies from recent rains. We were looking for wild Elderberries and even though we found plants, even some still in bloom at 8000'(!), berry production was super low.

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks for the update. Do you use the elderberries for pies, jam or jelly or wine? Some of the oldtimers in our area still wild ones but not near as many as when I was younger.
I get some nursery catalogs where they sell several names varieties and I know there is medicinal interest in them but I don’t see them for sale around here.

My grandmother would make an elderberry pie and a mulberry pie for my dad about every year back when I was a kid. I wasn’t that nuts about either one. They don’t last long once they are ripe, Birds like them. I think they are done for the year around our area now.

Last year we found a nice crop of Chokecherries out here and made jelly and syrup for pancakes/waffles/ice cream; delicious. Plan to do the same with Elderberries if we ever find some. High desert environs are not the best for such plants but they're out there if you get lucky.

I'm from Omaha and like you it sounds, my parents and grandparents took advantage of wild plums, elderberries, chokecherries, mushrooms, home canning, etc., so I grew up well steeped in all things and still enjoy.

We lived in Council Bluffs Iowa for nearly 8 years in the 70s. I was city arborist and parks superintendent for the city and lived in the house at the Lewis and Clark Monument that overlooked the river and Eppley airfield.
Somewhere here I have a gathering wild edibles book with recipes, I’ll have to look for it.

I probably should have started a 'build thread' but...oh well.

We have wanted simple but adjustable shelves and a peel-n-stick backsplash in our 15A for a while. Like many of you, there's a "list" and I finally got down to this little project (adding the peel-n-stick tiles & adjustable shelf system).

I used 8020 profiles & hardware, 12mm/1/2" baltic birch plywood for the shelves. They are easily up/down adjustable and solid for anything we'll have on them and cantilevered, as you can see below, to keep the vertical riser supports close to the backsplash and as unobtrusive as possible.

The shelf system isn't for storing anything while in tow mode but for use once we get to a camp spot. Given the dimunitive inside area of a 15A, we're trying to take advantage of every little bit of unused space yet keeping it uncluttered.

Today was first "rough" install; shelves will be removed, sanded & finished soon. Yeah, that's now on "the list" .

Thanks again to @rubicon327 for the Smart Tiles peel-n-stick recommendation!

Yes, yes, yes! An acquired taste perhaps, but ultimately a hoot-an-a-half.
