To Empty or Not To Empty?

In hindsight, I wish that ETI offered a cassette toilet option with a 4-5 gal capacity...configured similar to a Snoozy trailer (with external access to the cassette). That would make the waste disposal process much simpler and more flexible when compared to a conventional black tank.

Thanks, you saved my typing a similar response. I am amazed how people with "composting" RV toilets think it is a better thing, when in fact it is most often worse.

For many years here we have just put this matter into our City composting bins. Any organic matter can be sent to City composting. Plant material, dog waste, food waste. Heck, we scrape our dinner plates into the indoor compost bin which gets transferred the the big City bin when it fills. Pails of great compost are available from the City once a year, though they do use the majority for their own projects.

From the Pampers website:

Step 1: Lay your baby down on their back and remove the used diaper. Wrap it up and stick the tapes down to seal the bundle. Toss the diaper in the diaper pail or set it aside to throw out later in the garbage can. If you’re throwing the diaper into a garbage can, you might want to place it in a plastic bag first to reduce odors.

There are some nice screw top 5 gallon buckets out there that you can dump your tank into and carry to the nearest toilet or dump station the screw tops avoid splashes and leaks and are easy to open and close.

Below are four websites describing how to dispose of disposable diapers. All recommend the flushing of solids down the toilet.

The last one is from the City of North Vancouver and Pampers was not on their list of recommended diapers.

The only thing I’ll add to the compost versus black tank discussion is I hardly ever use water out of my fresh water tank to flush the toilet. I have 2 1-gallon containers I use, which I fill from whatever creek or lake I’m camped at. I reserve my freshwater tank water for cooking, dishes, and showering.

So the argument that a composter saves a camper from “wasting” drinking water in the freshwater tank can be easily addressed the way I do it. Which I do to conserve my water for things other than flushing the toilet.

That said, the idea of a composter IS appealing to me, but for sure if I dished out the $$ for one, I’d never dump the contents into a plastic bag and throw it into a dumpster. I’d figure out a way to finish the composting process at home. No need to add to the solid waste problem anywhere, no matter all the cat poop, dog poop bags, and loaded diapers that get dumped. It all adds up, so why add to it?? But to be honest, what grosses me out the most about a composter is having to deal with the pee bottle. But, that’s just me. Conversely, I don’t mind dealing with my black tank at all, so I’m sticking with it. Each to his or her own, I guess!!

EXACTLY! YES! This is what we did with our Rpod when we boondocked to conserve water (except we washed dishes in a basin and captured that water in a 5 gallon bucket for flushing). The whole reason we switched to a composter in the 5.0 is exactly that reason: to save water while we were dispersed camping. We're not trying to save the planet but that's the conclusion everyone comes to when I say we have a composter. Believe me, if I was trying to save the planet I wouldn't be driving around in a 4X4 truck pulling a 5000lb trailer. Now that the experts have told me it is safer to bury the compost, which is what I will do from now on, the world is safe once again from those darn black tank haters.

As for all of those links that sunrisetrucker sent about the correct way to dispose of a diaper. The only people who follow those instructions are hippies living on communes in Taos, New Mexico or Humboldt, California.
