Snow Bird Time!

Heading out tomorrow from Oregon to S. California, AZ, and possibly NM for a few months! Attending the Pow Wow at the Pechanga Casino/Resort near Lake Elsinore CA, (5-7 Jan) then heading to Quartzite for one night, then to Phoenix for a month or so, then down to Tucson and possibly up and over to Santa Fe NM before heading home sometime in March.

If anyone has any stops they recommend along I-5, then I-10 over to Phoenix please do. Also, for one night in Quartzite are we better off at Dome Rock or Plomosa Road? Never been there, at least to camp.

I can't wait to get out of the rain, rain, and did I say rain? Hope we see some of you on the road.

If the logistics work, Colusa State Park is worth considering for an En Route stop. The fee is less ($15 last time we stayed), and there is a very good Mexican Restaurant nearby....Don Habernaro

For your New Mexico leg, City of Rocks State Park near Deming, NM should be nice and warm that time of year. Most sites are reservation so check ahead of time. Percha State Park near Truth or Consequences is also nice. The cotton woods should be leafing out by then. Further up I25 going to Santa Fe, Cochiti Lake Recreation Area is an ACE campground just north of Albuquerque. Beyond that, heading north, things are subject to spring storms and snow.

If you're going to be in the Phoenix area you could try camping at the Desert Tortoise Campground at Lake Pleasant just north of Phoenix, it's generally difficult to get serviced sites but if you get onto the Maricopa County's website now I was able to secure a week long stay at a really beautiful unserviced site last year.

The area is very beautiful within a Saguaro Cactus forest with lots of walking an biking trails and a place to get firewood should you get the urge to have a campfire; there's a ring at every site.
