In Florida rain often comes with wind. If there is little to no wind I leave the awning about 1/3rd open and it does fine as a rain shield for the door. Lots of wind I retract and watch the manual awnings flop around.
I'd have to think about it, so far the electric awning has not done me wrong. I am aware of it's shortcomings. But the manual ones have faults too so

If I could only get sliding windows or wanted sliding windows then I would get the crank version and save the $700.
As for the rain, it is a simple fix...I use an expanding painters pole and a pvc cross bar that has a hole in it to accept the pole. It forms a peak in the awning. The pole fits in the pvc tube for transport. I thought I had posted in this thread but could not find it.

It can even be a far simpler fix than this. Only extend the awning about 1/3 during rain. Sheds water fine and keeps entry dry, with just the push of a button. Well, two button presses, technically.

I’ve been practicing this last week and now have my full open to fully stowed time down to 42.97 seconds! (Electric [emoji6])

Ha ha- when the motor goes(not if) then it all is a moot point as one will be trying to remember where the dang hand crank got stowed. Am I wrong?

The hand crank is a 3/8" socket (or wench).

The one in your vehicle tool kit might be handier.

An adjustable wrench would work in a pinch, but only as a last resort.

I think I can shave down in the 30 second range with some training and a coach by Feb. We may have a competition brewing for Quartzsite.

I’ve been thinking about this and propose the following: Competitors start with a fully stowed awning. At the start gun competitors must fully deploy their awning, then consume one 12ish ounce beverage of choice, then retract and fully stow the awning.

I’m going to start training to this regimen on the morrow.

From personal experience, I'd like to add to the challenge. Competitors are woken from a deep sleep by the thundering flapping of the awning and drenching rain, and have to remember what to do first.

Is the uniform for the competition then underwear, or other suitable night-time attire?

We actually had that at the very first Quartzsite gathering at 3am, now known as the Great Awning Scramble. We only had 21 trailers at the gathering and I can only imagine if it happened now with over 200 trailers in attendance.
