Deja Vue......

It is starting to happen again, shortages in the market are causing rising prices. Just tried to purchase online liquid soap refill.......unbelievable what they want for liquid soap. And with trickle down economics it will impact everything across market lines. Rant over, for now........

I think we are in for a short term period of moderate inflation. It feels like a bit more than that, but that's partially because we've been living with incredibly low inflation for the past two decades.

In any case, why I think this is short term:
1) People have a lot of cash on hand right now, related to the pandemic. But there has been no structural shift in labor rates, and so working people are not going to remain flush for much longer.
2) Lot's of pent up demand for goods coming out of the pandemic. This will not last forever, especially as the cash dissipates.
3) Supply chain disruptions, ongoing. Remember that a lot of the world remains unvaccinated and globally, the pandemic isn't over.

Hi: cpaharley2008... The easiest way to raise prices is to limit supply!!! In the early stages it was the "Oil cartels". Now everybody is at it.

Well, I don't see anyone artificially or deliberately limiting supply such as what happened with OPEC and oil in the 1970s. That's why the current situation is completely different. A key ingredient in 'stagflation' is stagnation, and we certainly are not seeing any of that.

I figure the more liquid soap that's purchased from Amazon instead of local stores, the sooner Amazon will become the soap cartel, as the only survivor.

As a hoarder with adequate storage, on non-perishable items that I use every year I often have extras on the shelf. This morning I went into the edge of town to get masking tape. While there I remembered that I only had two gallons of RV Antifreeze. At $2.69 per gallon I thought I ought to have a couple more so I bought three.

The supply chain disruption is real I know that and I see prices, especially groceries and gasoline rising so I watch the specials and stock up when I can. Gasoline, I just buy it when I need it and buy top tier product. I bought 48 cans of soup on Saturday morning. That will do me for lunch for several months as I like it about two to three times a week. Winterizer fertilizer that I like is $40 per bag this fall but coverage is 20,000 sq feet per 50 lb bag so that’s not as serious as if it was 12,500 sq ft per bag product like the usual fertilizers I get. I believe tha excess money people feel they have from not spending during the pandemic will disappear shortly, maybe lasting through the holidays. By January we will be hearing about folks who have to choose between heating oil and medicine. Up in our country it is propane or natural gas.

For us, a solar installation is really helping on utilities.
Study the Great Depression, learn to grow some of your own food, Take the “no utilities site” when camping for just one night, fill your water and run off the batteries. It will save you some money. Have lunch in the camper when on the road instead of a fast food joint. ( It’s not fast anyhow). A lot of us had subsistence agriculture grandparents. It is my new job to educate at least a couple of my grandkids about saving money. This includes how to use a paring knife on a buggy apple. And I’m doing it. YMMV

Somebody tried that here. Bought up TP and paper towels early in Covid and ended up with an apartment full of paper products that he couldn't move, with more arriving daily.

They pocked the corn adjacent to our house the last few days. Lots of cobs that could be picked up. The term “Rougher than a cob.” Comes to the mind of this old rabbit hunter. Who has ever started a fire in a wood stove with cobs, a dab of kerosene and newspaper kept in a pile in the corner?. Aaaah the memories. Wouldn’t trade them for all the tea in China.

Homemade soup tastes so much better to me than canned. The soup companies seem to over-season everything. With all the produce you get from your garden, I'd think homemade soup would be a natural fit around your house. It's fun to tinker with the recipes, too.

About every other week I make a large batch of soup. I am a chili, bean soup and chicken noodle soup fan. But for a quick lunch I like a bowl of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.
I get an Amish bean soup mix and use some ham and a couple hocks for bean soup. We do some canning and freezing and also eat venison we use it in chili or venison stew. If I was younger I’d build a root cave. My grandmother had one under the house. Always fascinated me. A few years back a friend and I raised and butchered 100 Cornish Rock chickens. Had a chicken or two every week. Average weight dressed was 5 lbs14 oz. after 67 days. Grained them up big the last 10 or 12 days. They were good. As a kid we had all kinds of delicacies including head cheese, pigeon noodle soup and all manners of wild game. Squirrel-b-que Is a favorite of my children to this day.

Headlines form our local newspaper.
Coast guard says 109 containers, not 40, fell off cargo ship near Victoria.

We are the toilet paper capital of the world but I will bet there will not be enough PS5 and Xboxes for Christmas. Or the prices will be ridiculous.

Speaking of containers, All that tea in China that Dave refers to, a lot of it has left China and is likely in many of the ships sitting off LA and Long Beach.
