Idaho earthquake

I spent the night in Meridian, Idaho a couple of weeks ago.

Living in the earthquake zone of BC served us well with the current Covid-19 panic. We always have 70lbs (17.5 gals) of propane on hand as well as a good stock of canned goods, fresh water and other essential needs. When I'm down to 48 rolls of TP then I go out and buy another 48 so the 72 rolls I've got on hand right now should see me through the current shortage.

I figure it's gonna get real interesting if the US or Canada recommends that everybody wear a mask out in public. Just the suggestion that they might will put pressure on supply that the medical community needs. They are already bidding against one another.

I have one N95, issued by my company during the SARS epidemic. Probably useless.

Ironically, I just reviewed my Earthquake insurance today. The state commissioner changed the rules in our favor. A single loss from aftershocks are now covered up to 168 hours from 72 hours. Also masonry damage can no longer be excluded by the insurance companies. (of course my premium went up $120 along with these changes, but I'm glad the coverage now reflects reality.) #ringoffire

... and like Barry, our earthquake shelter in place supplies have served us will during the current Covid-19 outbreak. (We have a shelter in place kit and a "Grab and Go" kit. Plus of course our trailer.

The downside? I live 1.5 miles from the Seattle Fault so when the big one does hit, the damage will be significant.

I was reading a response from a researcher a little while ago on the question (paraphrasing) "Would a series of small quakes reduce the risk of a big one, by reducing pressure?"

The seismologist stated simply, "No".

Yes, I too would prefer smaller to bigger, but I doubt that there's an option available to us residents living on the west coast of North America.

The quake last night just before 6:00 was quite frightening. Epicenter was near shake creek. Really!

Nevada earthquake

In February I was within 100 miles of the epicenter of today's earthquake in Nevada. That's four earthquakes whose vicinities I have visited this year: Pinnacles NP, CA; Crescent City, CA; Meridian, ID; and U.S. 95 in Nevada, which the press keeps mis-reporting as I-95. I heard ABC's David Muir say "I-95" three times tonight.

my son, the geologist specializing in neotectonics, just borrowed my F250 diesel 4x4 and is en route to Tonopah tonight, to do some geo mapping, searching for rupture, etc. he's meeting up with a couple geologists from his alma mater, U of N, who are bringing some drones and stuff to speed up the search.

"Neotectonics" sounds like what this article is talking about. It postulates that the California-Nevada border may replace the San Andreas fault as the place where the west coast splits off from the rest of the country:

hah, my kid did his PhD thesis on the Walker Lane.

double HAH! Ian is mentioned in this story about the same sort of thing as that Wired hyped up and glossed over version.

this is, I believe, a final draft of his PhD thesis. http://neotectonics.seismo.unr.edu/C..._Tectonics.pdf

I wish your son a successful scientific career. Good for him!

In February 2014 I was in the Death Valley area with my photography friend John. We encountered a geology professor and his grad student who were on a field trip. I wonder now if they were studying the Walker Lane. The professor was from Guernsey and was amused that I knew where it was. The grad student was from Wales. I should have asked her to speak Welsh since I've never heard it spoken. I don't recall their university.

John, thank you (and your kid), for that posting. As it turns out, a friend of mine has been looking at that same area (at the southern end) with a specialty interest in geothermal activity. He was actually camped near the Alabama Hills at the time of the 7.1, and observed some geothermal discharges near Little Lake, where the large uplift ridge is, created by the 1872 quake in the Little Lake zone. Interestingly, since he was on rock that was part of the eastern Sierra structures, they felt almost nothing, while east across the valley they could observe lots of activity (dust clouds, rock falls, geothermal venting).

Idaho is still shaking!

I don't know if anyone noticed but Idaho is still ringing from that last big earthquake. It has not stopped shaking yet. Here is the full article.
