The earthquake whisperer
Today there were earthquakes in two places in California that I have visited recently. There was one near Pinnacles National Park, and a cluster of quakes off California's Lost Coast, southwest of Eureka.
I'm going to Portland tomorrow.

Actually, Mike, we've had over 160 quakes in CA today. You're right, there was a nice cluster' off the northern coast, ranging from 1.8 to a moderate 4.9. They occurred at the intersection of the north end of the San Andreas fault and the southern end of the Cascadia zone.
The only thing we had was a 2.1 in Canoga Park, about 35 miles away, but nothing in Ventura County. (Sure beats tornado alleys and hurricane zones!!)

As long as I don't have to drink Corona beer, I'm good.

You're still in the Ring of Fire and will continue to be as you head north. No alligators (or crocs, for that matter), Burmese pythons or hurricanes up this way though.

Southern Ontario (the province) is so boring, no earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados or and severe weather of any kind. And considering this is Canada, we barely had enough snow this year to cover the grass.
I wonder when Tioga pass in Yosemite is going to open up?

You've already forgotten the ice-storm? You didn't buy the souvenir book?

is there a place in the world that is free of natural disasters?
We get avalanches, rock slides and flooding, not to mention drought.

Had tornado watch south of us last night and .65 inch warm rain. Took the last of the frost out
of the ground and brought the night crawlers out. Cool and windy today but won’t be long till the fish get going good. Watch for the Bow Echo and keep the insurance policy near.

But you've got Ottawa to contend with and all the hot air it generates.

We got snow. They said about 8 inches, but it is melting as fast as it is coming down. Looks like about four inches.
Everything should be green shortly.

Seismically stable
Indiana, for what's it worth, is very, very seismically stable. I can't speak to any of it's other characteristics. Swell enough of a place, but it does have a tornado or two, now and then. But those are such isolated, small footprint of disasters, mere trifles, compared to the risks of California, Oregon and Washington for a major fault rupture. Like this deadly, pesky viral outbreak......it's coming, someday. But not in sweet home Indiana.
At least not the earthquake.

But the off shore winds can cause problems and fan wildfires, and then there is smog in some metropolitan areas. And it does beat tornado alleys and hurricane zones.........until the mother of all earthquakes strikes, and we all know that is inevitable. Unfortunately, every location has its share of downsides.

I was in Myrtle Beach SC a few years ago and there were 15 trailers in a row from Quebec. I asked if they had left anyone at home to tend the store and was told "No need, nothing left to steal, Ottawa has already done it!"
I know the feeling.

I don’t think anywhere is completely immune, but NASA has produced risk maps for natural disasters for the entire world. Pretty interesting. If you look at the Multihazard Frequency and Distrbution map countries along a very northern band look pretty safe statistically. Canada, Iceland, Russia...

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Salt Lake City area Wednesday morning! Personally, I prefer smaller shakes to one big one!
