You ask a good question. I use some bluetooth (Victron, SensorPush) and it can make a difference. I have not used my Air Tag in the Escape as yet but where you hide it can make a difference. It can easily be tested in different locations.
Metal will be a good place to avoid, especially placing it next to refrigerator, furnace, water heater etc. Watch electrical area, WIFCO, solar controller. Don’t over think it.
I think the Air Tag will be an useful tool. From my experience it will work best for Apple owners.

That's probably true. I put it in Mom's glove compartment so it is close to lots of interference. It might be better somewhere else, though it shows up pretty well where it is unless the car is at home.

I am thinking of doing this as a third layer of protection.
What are some good spots to put a AirTag?
Spare tire cover
Front storage box lid
Awning
Sewer hose cap
And since they come in packs of four. Would there be any benefit to putting more than one on a trailer. If a bad guy found one tag would he look for the 2 nd one or think his phone was maul functioning?

The thief can ascertain whether or not an air tag is present if he or she has an apple phone. This according to my daughter who owns some air tags. I am not technologically proficient enough to verify this. Has anyone tried this with a non owner phone?

Not immediately as far as I know. After a certain amount of time the air tag announces itself to the iPhone owner. That happened when my sister borrowed my Mom’s car.

Places to put it: I figure the ledge over the front window in the 17b will be fine. The idea is to find it before the air tag announces itself or the thief hides the trailer (or has time to search it.) Sewer cap might be good if you want him to not find it very fast but I’m more worried about losing the tag.

WellI was thinking of in the sewer hose cap with Allien Tape.
Or under the max fan cover, up in the ac filter compartment.

It is true the thief would at some point be alerted to a tag which was not his own traveling with him.
But if the thief dumped the trailer before the alert. He would not know. That is built in to the tag to prevent someone from dropping a tag in a women's purse and stalking her.

Thanks for your clarifications. Sounds to me as if the air tag might have considerable value or at least be worth a try for no more than they cost. Working in public parks and recreation for 32 years we had trucks, tractors, off season snow plows, porta-potties. airy Christmas Tree drop cords and much more stolen from public parks and shops. We lived with theft, illegal dumping, and vandalism every day. Indeed a disheartening commentary on society.

Air tags do not. You do have to eventually replace them, though, as they have a battery that I do not believe you can replace.
Besides stalking women, apparently thieves are using AirTags to ID theftworthy cars and then steal them when they are parked in more remote areas or at night. So pay attention if you get a message you have an air tag traveling with you.

Air tags have a replaceable battery. I just changed mine and it lasted about a year.

Cool, thanks. I didn’t think they did. Does it tell you when the battery is getting low?

Yes, I got an alert on my iPhone. They use CR2032 coin batteries.

The low battery alert is a feature that was just dropped (past two weeks). Not sure why but my guess it was probably found to be something that could be exploited. It may come back in some other form.

Thats good to know. I thought IOS 15.6 just removed the battery icon in Find My but retained the low battery notification function.

There seems to be mixed reports on how soon a person would be alerted to the fact that they were traveling with a tag which was not theirs. 8-12 hours sometimes.
I would think if you knew your unit was gone out of your drive way, that you would have a good chance of locating it. Even better if they dumped it and left.
With over a billion IOS users possible pinging the tag.
If a trailer with a tag were towed through a city. I would think the tag could get pinged 1000s of times.

So how do you know the battery is low? You stop seeing the air tag?

I just checked my AirTag and it still shows the battery indicator. However, I have not connected to wifi in over a week. I am an IOS update behind. It will disappear with the update (supposedly). Is notification still available?
