US buyer picking up in Chilliwack?

Just got informed by ETI that the self import feature of the Chilliwack pickup precludes the owner carrying any personal gear in the trailer when it comes through the border.

So, anyone planning on picking up in Chilliwack, outfitting the trailer for use and bopping around Canada for a bit would have to unload all personal items from the trailer before crossing back into the US.

We are going to do a U turn and head south as soon as possible after the walk through.

On my trip from Florida to pick up my 2015 5.0TA, my truck was loaded to the hilt because I did not want to risk a customs search going across the border for orientation. Three large boxes in the back seat were literally packed with a shoehorn, and it would have been a disaster trying to repack them. I put everything into a motel room in Ferndale, WA. The trailer was delivered in Sumas, we went back to the motel, loaded the trailer and got it organized (not really, rearranged many times before it met our efficiency needs). We spent the night in the motel and headed for Osoyoos the next day, arriving the day before the rally began. IMO, having a loaded vehicle may, and I say may, cause suspicion on the part of border guards. If doing it again, I would do it the same way. YMMV.

For those like us getting a 5.0TA it’s going to take a little more planning.
We were going camping straight from the pick up. The back of the truck had bins with gear in it. With the 5th wheel connected there would not have been enough room for the stuff. Our back seat had a Lab and he takes up pretty much the whole back seat area. We didn’t have that issue because we picked up in Sumas.
C&G in FL had a option, maybe others can say how they did it.

Ah the old days were so much simpler.

I had my Escape brought down to the hub in Texas and met the truck driver there.
I traveled 500 miles from my home to the Texas location.
Having it shipped to that point saved me a lot of time and money.

Cheers....... and Happy Trails to ya......... Jack

Things must have changed recently…we picked up our 5.0 in Chilliwack back in August and drove across Canada for eight days before crossing into the US, at International Falls, MN. Our trailer was loaded with personal gear. The customs officer never even asked what we had in the trailer. We handed him the paperwork per ETI instructions, he took it inside, and less than 10 minutes later came back outside and handed the stamped forms back to us and opened the gate.

It appears that ETI has a new export broker and with the change come a list of requirements that might not have been implemented previously.

We picked up our 19 in Chilliwack in July and immediately crossed at Sumas. Our stuff was in tubs in the back of the Expedition. The inspector had us put down the window so he could see in the back of the car, but never looked in the camper or asked to look in any of the tubs. Didn’t even ask if we had anything in the camper.

Customs did not even look inside our new camper when we picked up late September 2023.
