I don't know what they use, but the Shakespeare Style 4351 antenna plus their ratcheting mount is what I ended up using. Much better antenna than the stock Escape unit.

My monorail antenna has worked fine for decades playing my FM stereo radio stations. 😁

Enjoy,

Perry

At home, I have a piece of insulated wire about three feet long that's jammed into a female receptacle on stereo. It's what the unit came with. Works.

I assume you fold it down when traveling?

That is why I added the ratcheting mount. Most won't nee this fancy an antenna, but I'm an NPR fan and are often a long way from the transmitters.

The rubber stubby ETI uses is only about 6-7 inches long. It is a standard screw-on thread, though, so it can be replaced by simply screwing on a new longer one. I used a 15 inch one for $20; didn't have to undo anything but the mast. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is also no need to mount an external antenna if you don’t want to make a hole in the trailer. Fiberglass has little affect on the signal other than limiting the height of the antenna by it being inside. Just make sure it is as high as possible and not near any metal objects that will block the signal in that direction.
It comes down to how important it is for you to hear distance stations versus holes.

When I installed my radio in my Escape I just laid the antenna inside an o/h cabinet near the radio, works fine without an exterior hole in the shell.

Jon you got a picture of your install. I Just got The ASA 1181067 That ETI installs. This seems very low quality. I looking for better alternatives.

the entire FM radio band is between VHF TV channels 6 and 7, so any VHF TV antenna will do just fine. or my favorite for semi-portable use is the 'folded dipole', which is simply a T made from 300 ohm flat antenna cable, where the two arms of the T are about 0.75m each (1/4 wave at 100Mhz), the T can be stretched out horizontally, and aimed perpendicular to the direction of the station, or it can be set vertically and its omnidirectional (via the vertical polarized component of the fm broadcast). Then there's always the single telescoping whip antenna for more portable use, not quite as high gain, but usually sufficient.

John is this one on amazon a folded dipole or just Dipole? I been looking at exterior months mostly ,But could something like this work for inside the cabinets it would not take much to tape it along back of the cabinets or head liner. I haven't been able to find one that converts to a 75 ohm Motorola plug.

For external I been looking at Jon set up (nice but i rather not have to fold it up and down) and This duel on amazon. The description says long range but in another section is says 10mile. its a 16" antenna similar to what escape uses.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have no problem drilling hole in the shell if thats what required. It seems to me maybe a longer antenna inside would work as good as the 16" stubby outside. Obviously you know more about antennas than I ever will . What would you recommend?

yeah, that's a classic folded dipole. its not 'folded' because its made from foldable wire, rather, a simple dipole would be twice as long, and only have 1 conductor on each leg of the T, typically made of tubing. a folded dipole is effectively a flattened loop, the 2nd conductor of the 'T' top closes the circuit and allows it to have twice the gain with the same size. or half the size with the same gain.

note that Marine Band is 157-175Mhz or osmething, higher frequencies than FM broadcast radio, which is 87-107Mhz. also an antenna like that quite likely has the wrong impedance cable to connect to an FM radio, which either wants 300 ohms (if it has two screws) or 50-75 Ohms (if it has a coax connector).

this might be a better choice, (marine because you probably want a white one instead of the more typical black)
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/dual-...hite--19462886

note that has a car stereo style antenna plug on the end of the supplied wire.

Thanks for the photos, Jon; I wondered what your setup looked like. Does the ratcheting mount have an interior plate that it attaches to?

I read that the ratcheting mount will also take Shakespeare's 8-foot AM/FM antenna. Hmm...

Thank you. ya the white was the one I linked on amazon. They have both maybe the link comes up black.I guess there is no good substitute to a out side antenna.

I thinking the shakespear mount could also be installed with VHB tape. In the down position would not be much wind and there pretty light

Jon did you put a fitting in the shell or just run the wire and seal? I assume you did this install because you where not happy with the reception of the smaller ET antenna?
