Do You Have Loose Nuts - SDS2 Stovetop

Have you checked your SDS2 stovetop and found loose nut(s)?

Yes,
Picked up the camper in February 2021, about 4000 miles of travel. After reading the threads re the cook top, I checked the nuts and they were both almost off! Purchased lock washers and Lock Tight and did the fix. Tubes below were intact and tight on inspection.

Just checked my cooktop. The right nut was very loose and the left nut was finger tight. Tightened them both and used loctite. Unfortunately I could not find a lock nut washer in the same style as yours. Checked 7 different hardware stores and no one had one quite big enough. Hopefully the tightening and the loctite will do the job. I will however check these nuts on a regular basis.

No loose nuts, here. But, the screws holding the heat shield had issues. One screw fell out and the other was about half out so the heat shield was hanging loosely below the stove top.

That must be their way of telling people it is time to check the tubes under the stove...easy without the shield.

Yes, one was a little loose.

The nut on the right side was just finger tight which allowed a little play in the valve stem. The left nut is snug with no play. I am planning to pull the stove to examine connections underneath and will install a lock washer behind each nut and secure each with a drop of blue loctite.

Yep, one was loose the other one snug but not tight. About a 1000 miles on the trailer.

Did the lock washer and thread lock on both sides.

Right one was very loose almost off, left one maybe two full turns loose. Have around 30,000 Kms on trailer. Tightened and tested and good now.

Checked cooktop valves by removing knobs. I found right valve stem nut completely loose.

Left valve stem nut was 3/4 loose.

This is an easy check-and-correct that everyone should do. We have no propane smell as of now, but I was checking as recommended.

Right side 1/2 way, left side finger tight (loose?).
I've followed this discussion since it started & looked at ours this afternoon. Our June 2020 21NE has less than 1000kms/600miles & the Suburban 2 burner has only been used to verify that the propane is getting through. So the cause isn't high mileage, vibration or even a result of being used.

USING a 5/8 inch deep socket, I tightened the nuts & secured with blue loctite. I'll get star washers next time I'm in a hardware store & redo this safety check.

I figured adding the socket size would save someone a couple of trips to the tool box.

I just checked my 2020 Escape 19 with roughly 2200 miles on it and the left burner was slightly loose. The right one was ever so slightly loose as well but tighter than the left one. I will do a proper tightening tomorrow with washers and blue Loctite. I'll inspect the tubes as well, just to make sure all is well under the stove. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This saved me from a potentially serious problem. I suspect that plastic beauty ring is keeping the nuts from being tightened properly. You have to wonder why Suburban didn't use washers behind those nuts.

I haven't had a chance to check ours, but I can tell you the aft end of the heat shield isn't connected...so it's quite likely more is loose, right?
Speaking of saving trips, can anyone tell me the interior dimension of the referenced star washers?

Both of ours were loose. I checked them a while ago when some people posted about the gas smell. I didn't use Loctite, but I plan to check regularly.

Both nuts on our stove had not backed off, but I removed one by hand and the other with needle nose pliers. I checked one hardware store for the lock washers but the ones I found where too beefy for this application in my opinion, and I would not have been able to reinstall the nut covers. I guess they figure a 1/2" lock washer is under a beefier nut.

I found that none of the three 5/8, or the two 16mm sockets that I have would fit inside the plastic covers so I used blue Loctite and tightened them as much as possible with needle nose pliers, which was much tighter than they were. I will still monitor them.

My question to others is, did you actually have a socket that fit inside the plastic covers or did you leave them off or turn them over?

You could just leave the covers off as they serve no purpose other than to prevent a socket from tightening the nuts or to see if they come loose.
After tightening everything I did slip them back over the nuts before reinstalling the knobs.

Yes, we also had screws become loose but ours were the screws on the under side of the cooktop that connect it to the oven. (Same as what you experienced?) They totally fell out and we could lift the cooktop away from the oven, just like the stove cover lifts up. We tried to reattach the screws but then the oven door didn't close properly. It took a lot of adjusting to get it to close properly.
