IF you want to press ~96 miles beyond San Angelo and just need a safe 'boondock' overnight, David Murphy has recommended the WTC Coliseum parking lot in Snyder, TX to me. He and Mary use that as a regular first night stopover on their trips west from Austin (search term "WTC coliseum" in google maps).
