The things you don't think of or know and the stories to tell.

After the really enjoyable Osoyoos Rally we were on our way to Haida Gwaii and well, we didn't make it.

We left on the Sunday morning and stopped in Merritt for nice lunch with some family and had a great night's sleep at Marble Canyon Provincial Park.

Got an early start the next morning and then around Mile 13 or so on Highway 97 the Jeep started running a little off, less power, sounding different. When it was safe to pull over with the trailer I had a low oil pressure screen come up. All I could really do was check the oil and it was full but smoke was coming out of the dipstick tube.

The good news is, I had purchased the Mopar extented warranty and I have to believe I'm a lucky guy because it expires next month.

Also that we were in cell phone coverage.

A big shout out to Regency Chrysler in 100 Mile House for replacing the Diesel engine 2 weeks ahead of the the promised 8 to 10 weeks.

We managed to get a tow truck that could also tow our trailer to 100 Mile House and we stayed at the Municipal campsite and after 3 days rented a U-Haul to get the trailer home.

I am posting this because we learned a lot working with our different insurances and the details of them.

Example, because our trailer didn't actually break down, our Aviva trailer insurance coverage was limited to $300 of the $900 charged to pull it behind the tow truck our Jeep Roadside coverage paid for to get it to the nearest Jeep dealer.

The U-Haul get the trailer back to Vancouver was $700.00 and not covered.

Jeep had me first confirm all scheduled maintenance was properly done before approving the warranty, luckily so.

Mopar would have paid for a hotel and some meals for the first 72 hours but we were pretty self contained and nothing was transferrable, like the getting home expenses and getting back to pickup the Jeep.

Got to get a couple more km's on the Jeep before I start towing again but we hoping to get out in August and hopefully can arrange some extended time off in September an extended trip.

Whew!

Lucky you, in many aspects, and unlucky you, for it to occur.
Did you get a post-mortem on your old engine...what went wrong with it?
I'm just curious. I don't have a Jeep, or a diesel engine, just wondering.

The work order stated Cause: Cyl Block Non-Castin Defect.
Metal in the oil and I believe it lost the bottom end.
They shipped a new complete crate motor.
72,00 km's.

Too bad that ruined your trip to Haida Guaii, well worth seeing and hopefully you'll get there at some point.

Left me wondering what BCAA would have covered in that situation.

Good question. If there's an agent for BCAA out there, perhaps they could chime into this thread and provide their input.

BCAA is an insurance company, so selling quality insurance and/or stating limitations would most certainly enhance their bottom line. Now to wait

We have the BCAA RVplus which includes trailers and motorcycles because I have both.

As near as I can figure, in the same situation, we would get 130 kms of truck and trailer tow which would get us to 100 mile house. So we wouldn't have had to pay the extra amount for the trailer.

But, insurance being insurance, I'm never all that confident that things that you think will be covered end up being covered.

Our 2014 Ford 150 broke down east of Logan lake. We had RVplus and the towing company loaded our truck on a flat bed and hitched our escape up to truck and towed us to Kamloops. He set us up to camp in a free spot and took our truck to be fixed. Kept in touch with us and picked my husband up to collect the truck when repaired. ICBC RV plus picked up the whole cost. We only paid for the repair.

My Ram Eco Diesel quit while towing a box trailer 500 miles from home out of state. It was when covid first started. The dealer service dept. could not even look at my truck until a week later. Since I had the extended warranty, the RAM/Ford dealer gave me a great deal on a trade in on a new F150. We moved our stuff to the new truck and headed home after 2 nights in a motel. I stopped by the dealer 3 months later to drop off the owner's manual. The truck was still parked behind the service shop. The part needed was part of a recall and they did not expect the repair parts for another 3 months. I was not wanting to buy a new truck, but I hate to think what would have happened if I left the truck to be repaired.

Do you mean BCAA RV Plus? ICBC is the government insurance company.
