That quite amusing "Ice-Breaker" because that is the one of the examples I was thinking about with my comments, the Equinox/Torrent models get no where near there advertised mileages. It just seems to be all over the place. I know one of the car manufactures lost a law suit in the states over this very issue not that long ago

Here is a site that reports "real world" gas mileage for a range of vehicles. Don't know how good it is, but does give you another point of view other than manufacturer claims. Real-World Gas Mileage

While not enough tug for a 19, my 2010 RAV4 V6 with tow package averages 21-22 solo around town, 25 solo on the interstates, and 15 towing at 55-57MPH with my 3010 lb 17B.

Just 2 cents worth.. We actually towed our 19ft Bambi from CA to Fla with our Highlander and sometime I was white knuckling down steep grades.. We then bought the F150 short bed.. 5.4L engine w/tow haul built in.. It was rock solid and actually got better gas mileage than the Highlander.. but we sold the Bambi and went to the dark side again and got a 24ft Itasca.. so the truck basically just stayed parked.. we had to force ourselves to drive it..
So the moral of the story is.. Who the heck knows what's around the corner next in life.. get the vehicle the vehicle that will get you there the safest with little worry..
BTW - we sold the truck too... lol

Or, in terms that other people use and so are more useful for comparison:
11.5 L/100km and
14.5 L/100km (towing)

Subaru uses horizontally opposed (also called "boxer" or "flat") engines - no vee designs - so it's an H6, rather than a V6. The difference isn't important, but it could cause some confusion to ask anyone about a "V6 Outback" and searches using that term will miss information about the vehicle.

Forgot about Subaru's and the flat 6 -- very good point!

A good website to view real world gas mileage is Fuelly | Share and Compare Your MPG
Browse for a vehicle and you can see a simple bar graph of what hundreds of drivers are reporting.

I've had good results towing my 19 with my 09 Ford Escape 4wd V6. No WDH required. Starting in April last year towed from the factory to Whistler, Prince Edward Island, NYC, and back to Calgary in October where the trailer is resting for a bit now :-) 16-17 MPG(US) at 55mph/90kmh. Lower milage on the Rogers Pass ;-)

I pull an Escape 19 with a Toyota Tacoma, 4.0L engine. It's not a full-sized truck but it's medium-hefty and does OK. I also know a person who tows one with a similar mid-sized truck, a Nissan Frontier.

A lot of v6 models have disappeared in the last few years, including the RAV and the Escape.
I have now test driven both the Tacoma and the Frontier. Both would be nice run-around-town vehicles. I think the seats in the Tacoma leave a little to be desired. I'm concerned that on a long tow day, when we're in the vehicle for 8-12 hours, they'd be a problem.
The Nissan dealer has a 2012 Frontier v6 4x2 with 7000km on it for a nice discount.
Still need to take a close look at the highlander and pathfinder. Also, I was just reading the 2012 consumer reports (I know, I'm not buying a toaster... still, it's something), and they rated the Chevy traverse quite highly.

I gave up on Consumer Reports when they complained that the Corvette they were testing lacked a back seat and luggage space.

But it does lack a back seat and luggage space... So the review was entirely factual. I don't see a problem here...

addendum to an earlier post of mine... Yes, the Escape v6 is gone, but there's a 2.0l ecoboost option. It's rated to pull 3500 lbs -- not enough for a 19, but good enough for a 17.

Take a look at a 15' Escape that I have for sale on this site. Empty it is under 1500 lbs and loaded for camping it weighed in at 2075 lbs. Your vehicle can handle that. The 15' has the same size bed as the 19'.

Our current vehicle can't... It's a 4 cylinder rated for max 1500lbs towing. If we already had a vehicle with 2500lbs rating, none of this backing and forthing would be necessary.

Hi: dbailey... With the downsizing of new vehicles forthing is getting harder and harder. With a trailer backing always was!!! Alf

Doug, I know that it is different for each of us in different seats, but we both have backs that can sometimes give us problems and both have found that with adjusting the lumbar support on the Tacoma we are decently comfortable for those very long days in the saddle. So, if that would be a deciding factor, and you didn't already do that, you might try messing around with that adjustment on the Tacoma seats.
