You're not going to get the rate you find on the internet or on the TV news and between the time you read the rate and the time you buy it will likely have gone up, or down.

Taking advantage of the USD-CAD exchange rate
We took delivery of our 19’er about a month ago. :-)
The Christmas season has been so busy that we haven’t had a chance to take it out yet! :-(
Our salesperson also was Linda. Yes, she’s teriffic, patient and knowledgable. Everyone we worked with at ETI was great, in fact.
I think it was Lisa at ETI who suggested that we check out Transferwise.com. You transfer your USD to their US account, then they turn around and transfer the money to ETI in CAD, at the current “actual” exch rate. I watched the exchange rate closely as the trailer was being built, and when it took a dip in the direction that was favorable, we moved. Transferwise charged us about $160 for their service, which we thought was pretty reasonable; they seemed to beat the rate everyone else was offering by a couple of cents at least. I figured each penny difference in the ex rate represented about $200 savings for us.
So, that’s our version of “playing the exchange rate!”
Happy Holidays, everyone!
Mike

Betting on the change in currency exchange rates has a name. It's called arbitrage, also a French word. It is done by buying and selling the same thing in 2 different places with different currencies that have different values. It is usually done on the spur of the moment but it can be done over months or years too.
People can make fortunes trying to do this. Mostly they lose fortunes though.
The best plan is to track trends and buy when you think the trend is at a low point. You will be wrong but perhaps not too wrong. Or you could just buy the trailer when you have the money available and not worry about a couple of percentage points. After all, ETI has to buy a lot of their stuff from the lower 48 so they are on the other side of the coin. When the exchange rate makes a big move ETI has to adjust their prices accordingly so it tends to even out a lot.
Once you come up with a purchase plan, stop shopping. You will never get the best possible deal. Nobody ever has. Tracking it will just ruin the experience for you, not to mention your mental state.
If you just can't leave it alone then think of it this way. Sure you could save a couple of hundred bucks by carefully examining trends, causes and results but by spending the same time and effort you could earn even more at a job, if you wanted to have a job. What ever you don't save is the price of not being a slave to the market or a boss.
|
And after purchase, you can park your new trailer in the garage (another French word), if large enough!

Do not forget the required disclosure of a foreign bank account to the IRS form 114 (FBAR) if the balance at any time is $10,000 or more.

Good for USA buyers. It's the lowest I've seen in months and months.

I wonder what percent of all buyers are from the States?
It’s certainly a good time to be a buyer.

A quick perusal of the map looks like maybe 25% Canadian and the rest US customers or maybe 1/3-2/3. But not everyone is one the map....

Population of the US is roughly ten times that of Canada. Likely sales are roughly the same.

Hi: Donna D... Good for you!!! In bygone eras it used to cost us 40 cents on the dollar to travel south in the winter. Seems we've slid back there again.
BTW Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too!!! Alf
