I thought that was you, Ross, doing that atmospheric perturbation!
This was an interesting venture: As usual, Morro Bay SP was booked solid. But, for once, I ignored the on-screen message, and started perusing the calendar, and spotted one spot that was available mid-week, so we snagged it. We took our (relatively) new ebikes, and spent a couple of days just riding around town, and the waterfront, of course. Even got our "Rock" squirrel sighting in!
Then took the leisurely CA-1 route back south.

No, I didn't know about this photo or about the 60 Minutes segment - most interesting. Thanks so much for sharing. I've done just enough noodling around about NL to know that it's near the top of my bucket list, but haven't done much research yet. You've got me inspired!

Chilly week at Grand Canyon. We'll be warm soon enough, supposed to be in the 90's next week at Valley of Fire.

If you are talking (well writing) about Valley of Fire State Park in NV (there is a Valleys of Fire Recreation Area in NM), the 1.5 mile round trip hike to the Fire Wave is interesting. Not as stunning as the Wave in AZ, but still worth the hike.

A shooting range with balloons as targets? (Of course not, but a surprising sight to find at a shooting range.)

The balloon launch arena is about three miles downwind from the range. The balloons are generally in the air at first light and have landed before the firing range opens.
Still a nice sight to see when going out early.

Having a great time in SW Utah. Snow Canyon State Park is fabulous, highly recommend it. We skipped Valley of Fire because it was 97 there...now a few days later in Cedar City we are unable to go up to Cedar Breaks National Monument because they have 20-30 foot snowdrifts over the road and don't expect the visitor center to open until mid-June. Heading over to Kodachrome Basin tomorrow and then Torrey/Capitol Reef NP where it sounds like the weather will be more reasonable.
My cancer treatments are going well. 14 months ago they gave me 12 months to live and here I am. The Grim Reaper is still after me but he's a couple of miles back and I'm running like mad!

Yeah, Cedar Breaks is really high elevation. Really I don't think you missed much; it's similar to Bryce Canyon but not as good as Bryce.
Glad you're not sitting at home moping or anything.

if you're spending a couple nights in Kodachrome Basin, I *highly* recommend driving the length of Cottonwood Canyon Rd... its a well graded dirt road, although if its got icy or muddy stretches, a 4x4 with A/T tires is probably a good idea. We did it in early spring, with my f250 and never needed 4x4. tons of cool places to get out and stare at cool geology that changes mile by mile.
at the south end, hang a right on US89, and in Kanab, stop at the Rocking V Cafe for an awesome dinner, then continue north on US89 and right on state route 12, which will take you back to Kodachrome Basin. All told its about a 185 mile loop, we left middle morning, had a early dinner in Kanab, and were back in camp at a reasonable time

Never get tired of looking out at the red cliffs of Torrey, UT from our favorite site at Thousand Lakes RV park. We've been coming here for over 20 years, lots of great hiking at Capitol Reef National Park.
