It's magical, like seeing a migrating flock of Canada geese fly across the face of the full moon in October.

I have this app for my Android phone. I should make more use of it. I can always find the North Star using the Big Dipper, so always know my directions if it is not cloudy.

That's it, I gotta ad fireflies to my bucket list.

Mississippi Rally might just accommodate that one Jim. We used to catch em by the jar full when I was a kid.

My son works with several engineers from
India, Malaysia and other areas in the Southern Hemisphere. They were at our home for a party a few years ago. One fellow was walking around with his phone angled up and to the south. I asked him what he was trying to find and looked at the picture on his phone. It was the Southern Cross. Wrong Ap. I got him oriented with Midwestern Boy Scout logic. We had a good
laugh and a pull on the Scotch bottle. My son in law remarked. " And now, the Johnny Walker has been read".

I was so advanced I used to sneak a small jar loaded with these little glyphs of
neon into my room and shake hell out of them and then try to read a comic book after
lights out. They stink if you smash them and smear them on your face for luminescent war paint.

With today's modern spell "checkers", the OP could have been asking about "undertow".

Regarding underglow lights, if done right, they only shine down, not out, for very indirect lighting. And if the unique lighting helps you find your camper at night from among all the other campers, or if they help you see your camper steps in the dark so you don't sprain your ankle or twist your knee or do other sorted damage to your body, why not? Plus, I think they can look pretty cool and shouldn't outshine the Milky Way if installed as intended. I've certainly seen some other camper night light schemes that were more offensive than underglow lights. My two cents....

Agreed. It's why we camp after all, to see what we can't see in our homes in our towns and cities.

I find almost all night light schemes offensive. My two cents...
But having said that, I do miss the hum of Coleman lanterns at night (on low).

I agree completely. I have never put a light on my trailer at night to find it, only to use as a task light, I have never not found my way back to it, and I have never had trouble going in. And many of these nights have seen me a tad under the influence.
But, if someone does it, I might just roll my eyes, but they certainly have every right to do so.
But! Are you totally off your rocker?
While I can kinda understand the sentiment, I finally gave up my white gas lantern a year ago for an LED one, and only wonder why I didn't do it earlier. Remember the sound when you turned it off, that's right, there wasn't any.

Yup.
And I still have and use a Coleman lantern on occasion although very few others do.
Edited: I, too, have never had a problem finding my trailer/camper/tent/sleeping bag at night. That's why flashlights were invented.

If you are interested in fireflies you have to visit the Great Smokies NP in Tennessee where the fireflies are synchronized. They all come on at once and then off, like turning on a light at night and turning it off. Truly a spectacle to experience....and only happens in one place on earth....

I've watched people wrap their trailers ,awnings , ,antennas , flag poles ,steps , dog , trees , bushes and mark the borders of their campsite with multicolor rope lights that flash and change colors to the music they are playing. Fascinating and charming to some.
I am too lazy and cheap to waste my time and money making my campsite look like a holiday light display.
I did put reflective tape on the bellyband of our trailer which glows when you shine a flashlight on it.
Bright lights at night , generators , loud music especially RAP , barking dogs and over exuberant drunks all detract from the camping experience in my estimation.

I like the lights in established campgrounds during the social part of an evening - I find them festive and welcoming then (but not all night).
In more remote areas, I prefer only a fire and then the stars.
In the SW, folks string solar lights under trailers to discourage wire chewing rodents; also lifting the hood on cars for the same reason. Some folks use small solar lights to highlight a perimeter if camped near a deep wash or ravine - handy if you don't want to glue your headlamp permanently to your forehead.
I've used lights to find my trailer after dark in the desert. Without clear roads, or even tracks, unless it's a cloudless night with a full moon, you can get lost driving 'home'. Small solar light or even reflectors on stakes can also really help navigate the crucial turns across a desert route home.
