Never heard that. My owners manual states not to mix different types. I recently had an overheating problem. It was my own fault. Hot!, Hilly country, A/C on max( I don't remember doing that). I was keeping the RPM up in the hills as I have stacked tuners and have to monitor the EGT and Boost in the mts.

I wasn't watching the temp (watching the EGT gauges) and smelled the temp rise. Stopped and added 1 gal anti freeze (all I had) and 1 of water. That's when I (Hanging my head) read the manual.

Hi Johnny
Read your post and I thought of RV antifreeze as I have been getting the camper ready for an outing and saw that I had 2 gallons of RV antifreeze on the shelf. I usually by a case of six when it’s on sale and use two gallons to winterize. I usually get it at Menards and the -40F stuff is plenty for around here. Especially with the building. And no wind. I just get the regular pink stuff and it’s about $3.00 a gallon last time I bought so probably more now. Theisens and fleet farm have it too. I do not mix brands or concentrations and make sure what you buy is not poisonous. Which sounds stupid but it has happened.

Hey Donna you were too fast for me I had to go back and edit, misspelled my name.

For a motor vehicle or RV? ONLY use RV anti-freeze when winterizing your trailer. Motor vehicle anti-freeze are glycol-based. Common coolants consist of a mixture of ethylene glycol and it's poisonous to man and animals. RV anti-freeze is 'safe,' you could actually drink it if necessary although it's not recommended. RV anti-freeeze is propylene-glycol-based.

You can drink it and some of us have...same stuff they give you to do a "clean out" before a colonoscopy!

It's also used to keep ice cream from freezing into a giant ice cube.

I'll second that. I think it was about a gallon of that horrible stuff...

In January 1994 there was record cold in Minnesota, so cold the governor shut down the state one day. It was around 50 below in my area. Numerous RV's had broken pipes from RV antifreeze that didn't live up to expectations.

Since that freeze I've changed my winterizing to:
  1. Blow out lines
  2. Fill lines with antifreeze
  3. Blow out antifreeze.

The antifreeze dilutes any water left when blowing in step one and that diluted antifreeze/water is blown out in step three.

For the above procedures follow the detailed instructions that have been given already.

Since I'm going to blow the lines free in the spring I may as well do it in the fall.

With no antifreeze in the lines I'm pretty much assured I can handle another record freeze.

Enjoy,

Perry

Plumbing or "RV" antifreeze can be based on propylene glycol, alcohol, or both.

Some automotive antifreeze is based on propylene glycol, but it's still toxic, due to other additives.

I buy the Propolyne glycol kind. This article says there can be a difference between the 2 types and they refer to the seals. I
use air to blow out the lines and put a little antifreeze in the lines and drains. https://www.thedrive.com/reviews/39456/rv-antifreeze
