2024 Eclipse Caravan

I'm signed up for an RV caravan trip in 2024 (yes, years away) that will end up in Durango Mexico to observer the 2024 total solar eclipse... This is by far the best location in the whole of North America to see this eclipse, will be 4.5 minutes of totality.

The caravan company is still taking reservations, with a US$400 deposity, for guaranteed slots in these trips. We're doing their whole 85 day Yucatan trip before the eclipse, thats nearly full, and we're also planning on doing their Copper Canyon extension on the exit leg from the Mazatlan area.

We'll see you in Durango then John. We are signed up for only the Durango option as we normally winter in Mexico. More than likely we'll spend time in the highlands near Lake Chapala, head down to the Pacific after the holidays, migrate back up to the highlands as the coast heats up. Then arrive in Durango on April 6th, 2024

Wow that looks awesome! It's a bummer for me the eclipse isn't happening a bit later in the month...as a CPA, I can never hit the road before April 16

Wow! Thanks for posting this. I was completely oblivious to the possibility of going to Mexico to view the total eclipse. Had planned to be in Oregon for the 2017 eclipse with our A-Liner, but a death in the family took precedence, and we had to cancel.

In 2015 we spent a couple nights in Pocatello, ID getting a new rear tire for Gary's motorcycle. He'd picked up a nail and while we'd plugged it, you don't ride Z rated tires at anything above 40 mph if plugged. We stayed at an inexpensive but nicely managed motel near the University. In 2016 I tried to make reservations for the Eclipse in 2017 at that same hotel, rates were $500/night with a 3 day minimum stay! We signed up early for this Eclipse site and viewing based on our last experiences. While we might find a site on our own in Mexico to view the Eclipse, in 3 years all the areas could be rented out to someone else. We personally know one of the co owners of the company. They are very honest with a fairly long history of honesty. We happily paid $400 just to set aside space for ourselves for Eclipse watching.

We were in Arco, Idaho in 2015, and ate RIBS at an RV park/restaurant/bar, with the intent to book three nights in 2017 for the eclipse. The owner took our deposit, while scoffing at the idea that he would be mobbed by would-be eclipse viewers in 2017. Fast forward to the week before the eclipse, and the RV park owner was charging $300/night with a 3 night min. And he sold every spot that he had, and every spot that he could invent. 2023 and 2024 will probably be the same.

The annular solar eclipse in 2012 was just as astounding. The National Park Service had anticipated a much smaller crowd. It was mayhem. Page, Arizona will never be the same.
