Context matters whenever a word has several connotations. In this thread the poster was clearly using the word to mean 'Americans' as fits definition (1) that I pasted.
To a non-American, 'Yankee' means American. They are less interested in the short period of time when half the country tried to not be Americans anymore. They are probably even less interested in baseball.
