SS Stove vs Stock Black
We were thinking of getting the up grade 3 burner stainless steal stove on our build sheet then I start reading old threads how some people are finding that the top scratches. Also I am not really interested in having to put a cover over a cover to protect it as some have done.
So my question is...are people finding the stainless steel tops are still scratching? Do the stock black lids scratch as well?
If this has been discussed before, please post the link as I could not find a direct comparison.
Thanks

Might be more an issue on the smaller trailers, we have no scratches, but then we rarely need to leave the cover down as there is plenty of counter space.

The stainless matches the stock sink, you can get a 2 burner ss stove which is a little smaller, the top flips up and functions as a splatter shield. I removed the top, purchased a wooden carrying tray to use as a cover and take items outside, the stock cover could not perform this dual function.

I would add to what Jim has stated. And this depends on how the user cooks but we have never needed more than two burners at any given time over the many years we have been camping/RVing. It would be interesting to hear from those with 3 burners how often they have actually needed or used 3 burners.

Never, could have gotten away with 2. Would be nice if they were a bit farther apart.

This topic is so timely--I just came to look for comments I had seen before. I really like the bright look of the stainless. Jim, I like the cover idea, too. Do the screws in the hinge just go directly into the countertop, with nothing coming from below? I'm planning on asking for the lid not to be installed, figuring I can always put it in if i decide I want it. That way I don't have to fill the holes.
If I borrow your tray idea I could put a piece of my Formica on the bottom so when it's in place it will match the counter. If you have a picture handy, could you please post? Do you secure it in place somehow for travel or stow it elsewhere? Thanks.

As Bob has stated, the spacing of the burners on the three burner stove is a bit cramped.

No, the lid is not part of the stove, it is held in place with 4 wood screws and washers, into the countertop. I'll have to search my post on the tray, maybe part of "Prairie Schooner mods" or a separate. I'll get back in awhile.

I stand corrected, Jim. I thought it was part of the stove. Another senior moment.

On a 19 build one should seriously consider the Dickinson stovetop that is flush with the counter when not in use. This makes the counter top area much more functional. This thread below details it best. I think ETI will install one in a 19 if requested, but not in a 17 because of the clearances to the furnace underneath. The stock stove gets the job done but are a very economical stove. One thing I found with the standard Atwood DV20 stove is that they have a small vented regulator right at the stove and we would occasionally smell a little propane. The Dickinson does not have this.
When you see the cost of the Dickinson remember it is marine grade construction, has electric ignition and a safety system that shuts off the gas if the flame goes out.

I can confirm that Escape will install the Dickinson. I am getting one on my 19. I considered getting the drop in Suburban but although the Dickinson is a bit more money, the quality speaks for itself.

The Dickinson is very nice. We find that we aren't cooking as much as using the counter - and now it's actually useable. The difference in heat output is considerable. Cooking is much quicker now.

stainless stove
Haven't had any issues with scratches on the stainless. Then again most of the cooking is done outside. Have 2 burner stove turned 90 degrees, don't think I have ever used more than 1 burner at a time. Others probably have different needs but I would have ordered a single burner cooktop if it was available.

Biggest advantage of 2 burner vs. 1 burner - 2 different sizes. Usually one burner is used to store the tea kettle while using the other burner. No problems with scratches on the SS.

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like if you don’t drag the cast iron pan across the closed top there should not be a problem. 3 burners required...meat, potatoes, gravy...

Ours is white and I managed to shave off some of the surface with a single edge blade while trying to remove a sticker.
We've never used all three burners, but mostly boil water for coffee on it. Outside, where we cook, I have a BBQ and two single burner butane stoves.
