New home in Idaho

A week ago today we rolled into Idaho Falls with the 5.0 in tow. It's been a wild several weeks but the end to the craziness is insight. In 29 days, the Escape will have an insulated garage with a high bay door so it can be out of the elements. But first it goes to the frame and axle shop to determine why the passenger side tires wore down to the cords on the 800 mile journey. Once that is taken care of, I can finally get to all of those mods I was planning but could never get to due to HOA rules of working on vehicles in the driveway back in Albuquerque. Most of all, I'm happy to have some time to catch up on what's been going on in the Forum.

Glad you made it there safely. I hope they get your Escape properly diagnosed and fixed. Sounds like maybe axle(s) bent or misaligned.

I’m up north of you, a bit south of Lewiston. I usually camp and fish down your way though, somewhere near Henry’s Lake or the Henry’s Fork. In case you’re up there too and see a nice 19 with purple graphics!

Congratulations on your relocation, wishing y'all the best in your new home!

Aside from that, an item of thought prompted by your experience ....

I wonder if one of the trailer TPMS systems which provides temperature data would give an early indication of this issue while underway? My thought is that the abnormal 'scrubbing' of the tread would manifest as noticeably increased relative heat in the affected tires, maybe even more than heat-related pressure increase.

No, I'm not sure what mitigation that might prompt while on the road, but I think maybe still useful to have an early indication of such a problem while underway....

Good thought. I bet you're right. I was planning on getting a TPMS system since I am going to replace all four tires once I get the axle situation resolved.

Thanks all. We are glad to be here. We've been wanting to get to this area for sometime. The opportunity presented itself and so we dove right in. Hope to see some of you all up around here.

How worn were those tires when you started? Did both tires wear down evenly, and all the way round? Were they properly inflated? Hard to imagine what could have caused the symptoms you describe.

We had some wear on the front this past summer. I made sure the bearings were seated correctly and adjusted the axle bearing. I monitored the wear with a tire depth gauge and everything thing seemed normal. Our last two camping trips had us go over some very pot-holed roads. All I can think is we hit some of them too hard and bent the axles. I check tire inflation religiously and they were at the recommended 50psi
