Delete Range Hood?
Hi folks,
I'm sure to most people the recent news from ETI that they can't source Stainless Steel range hoods and are substituting with black is no big deal. There are those of us however that having a mismatched item (SS stove, SS backsplash, black Rangehood) is a big deal.
I guess there are a few options:
1) Accept the black hood and perhaps look for a replacement.
2) Ask ETI to run the wire but not install the range hood. I know they are getting away from deleting items but I'm thinking since this is due to a supply chain issue they may be ok with it.
3) Ask ETI to not install a range hood, wire or exterior vent.
I'm wondering how much we would miss the range hood. In an E19 the Maxx fan is only a few feet away. Not having the outside vent is one less hole in the side of the trailer and my experience has been those vent flaps rattle in the wind continually.
Also, I see a couple of other threads where people have been trying to source a replacement flap when theirs has broken or fallen off.
Any thoughts from this super experienced group would be welcomed!

Please don't!
How much water does burning propane produce?
1.6 pounds of moisture into your space for every pound of propane burned.
Why does burning propane produce so much water?
It doesn't seem possible, does it? How could one pound of propane contain more than one pound of water? Let's take a look at the chemistry.
C3H8 (propane) + 5O2 (oxygen) → 3CO2 (carbon dioxide) 4H2O (water)
For each molecule of propane burned on the left, 4 molecules of water are released on the right. The molar mass of propane is about 44 grams/mol. The molar mass of water is about 18 grams/mol. So:
44 g Propane + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + 4*18 g Water
44 g Propane + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + 72 g Water
1 g Propane + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + 1.64 g Water
So, where is all that extra weight coming from?
In fact, very little of the weight of the water produced comes from the propane itself. By weight, water is mostly oxygen, and the oxygen comes from the air. If we add the molar mass of the remaining molecules, the equation balances nicely:
44 g Propane + 5 * 32 g Oxygen → 3 * 44 g Carbon Dioxide + 4 * 18 g Water
44 g Propane + 160 g Oxygen → 132 g Carbon Dioxide + 72 g Water
204 g Reactants → 204 g Products
This is why I cringe every time someone says they are doing / getting a range hood delete.

I personally would never go without a range hood, especially if you plan to do a fair bit of cooking inside. Though their purpose is primarily to remove moisture in the air, they also do good with smoke and greasy particles in the air as well.
Because they are not that pricey, I would be tempted to go with black temporarily and replace in the future, though I bought and installed my own and it was not very much trouble, just mount it, wire it, and provide a vent hole to outside.

Following this through, a Maxx fan moves a lot of air. Not an effective substitute?
Also wondering why, with this much water being produced and sucked out through the range hood, why we never see condensation on the filter or exterior vent?

Thanks Jim. This is the likely option for sure. I even thought that if I could find SS I might be able to send it to ETI.

All I can say is even with our Maxxair fan on, if we forget to turn on the range hood fan or open the exterior vent lid, we immediately notice the moisture and smells.
As Jim Bennett mentioned it isn't just moisture that the range hood fan removes, it is grease particles and odors. The Maxxair fan will pull or push those into other areas of the trailer.

If you've ever painted a kitchen, you'd never go without a range hood. Even coffee has oils in the grounds/beans and I'm not interested in dragging that across the ceiling and out the roof.

All good points. Hopefully by the time we are in production (fingers crossed for June) they'll have sourced the SS range hood. Otherwise we'll go with black and look for a replacement if it bothers us too much.
It's not easy being this picky!

Very True, Fender! Once you start using your trailer, it becomes more about the adventure, and less about the product details. At the end of a great day, you get to sleep in your own bed!
Cheers

N when your set up at your camping site, just take a clothes pin clip the vent a hood flap open. This will keep that flappy noise away lol

Go with the black, and eventually when supply chain issues ease and you can find the same model in stainless steel it would be a very simple swap, the range hood is not a terribly expensive item.

You could have the black vent installed at build and when you have the trailer at home remove the vent hood and spray it with stainless steel colored paint (Lowes: Krylon-Specialty-Appliance-Stainless-Steel-Enamel-Spray-Paint) for $7. Would give you practice for later replacement if you decide the paint doesn't provide the desired results. Best of luck.

One advantage over stainless, you can use fridge magnets on the black or white range hoods.

I’d think the stainless was in color only and made of the same material as others?

Beats me. I shouldn't have responded, since my trailer was built in 2008. Lots of changes since then.

S.S. hood
At least on my stainless hood, a non-magnetic version was used. Some stainless is slightly to mildly magnetic. Depends on the alloy type.

The base metal is different, 'stainless steel' is not just a color coating. Some stainless steel is attractive to magnets, some is not, depends on the specific alloy.
FWIW the SS vent hood in my 2021 5.0 will not hold a magnet.
The painted vent hoods are made of a different mild steel alloy which will hold a magnet.

Well, he is American. They seem to use obscure terms like pounds, yards and mph. while the rest of the world has moved on.
I agree, always nice to see a cogent factual explanation.

I can't take credit for the chemistry, it comes directly from the linked article.

I was schooled prior to The United States Metric Board being abolished in 1982 by then President, Ronald Reagan. So, I understand and would be comfortable if the United States, moved forward with the Metric conversion it abandoned. Unfortunately, the anti-science crowd, has been more emboldened in recent years. We seem to be moving backwards, rather than forwards.
