Odd Tire Wear

My passenger front tire is wearing severely on the outside (Escape 21). I noticed it for the first time this fall and am not sure what is causing the issue. The wear is only on the outside, and the three other tires have worn evenly. I'm a stickler for checking tire pressure before each trip and rarely needed to add air. The pictures are the passenger front and rear tire.

1.What would cause the tire to wear this way?

2. Is this an alignment issue, and if so, how can it be addressed?

Michael

Me too.

Leaving a site this Fall, I did a walk-around and noticed I had a flat tire. I think same location as yours. Swapped it out, but the tire was worn as yours. I bought a new tire, but assume there is some mis-alignment.

The other 3 tires appear normal.

tire wear

I think load distribution and many miles of very twisting roads can show some unusual wear patterns as one axle or other will be doing some sideways sliding.

I did a lot of camping in the NC, TN, VA, and WV mountains this year, so lots of twits and turns. Since it's the front tire, do you think I need to add more weight to the front of the trailer? We do carry bikes on a 1Up rack in the back, so to counteract that weight I've tried to keep things up front. Maybe I need to do a better job there.

I have a similar issue, uneven tire wear. Not sure what the solution is.

Not sure if this helps or not but this is from the Dexter Torflex Service Manual. If you are religious with tire pressure this seems like it could be related to uneven loading. Is your towing setup level?

Not To say alignment isn’t the cause but uneven loading or slightly loose king nut that hasn’t seated the thrust washer and is not a little better than “hand tight” don’t help either. I’m a tire rotator with all 5 tires and wheels in the mix. YMMV.

Jack it up and pull on the wheel back and forth. If it moves much at all that could be your problem- castle nut too loose.

I like that approach for both trailer and TV

Just to add to the possibilities, it could be that you inadvertently hit a curb, rock or other obstacle and bent the axle. The fix would require a visit to a good alignment shop experienced with trailer axle repair.

When Reace owned the company he told me to rotate front to back, no swapping sides.

I only did it once in 7 years.

That is an interesting graph. Thanks for sharing. The drivers side has to weigh more than the passenger side due to the fridge, bed, and closet/cabinet space available. The only true weight on the passenger side is the batteries in the back and the stove. Waste cans, pots and pans, and food above the sink don't weigh much compared to the driver side stuff. We've cut back on what we carry quite a bit over the years, so I weigh less than I did at the beginning.

I don't recall jumping any curbs or hitting anything in the road, but potholes are here and there.

Odd Tire Wear!!!

Hi: rotateclockwise... This is one very compelling reason not to run on "Odd tires". The only odd thing about my last set of Carlyle tires was a radial crack in the tread of only one tire. Alf

There is nothing in the Owner’s Manual about rotating tires and there is a lot in there about tires.

Rotate to hide the damage

The same tire worn on the outside edge on my 5.0. I guess if we had rotated them as much as we should we would not be able to notice the damage because it would be spread out on 5 tires. Wouldn’t a loose castle nut result in wear on the inside of the tire?

Maybe a long shot, but check to see that the brakes are working on all four wheels/tires.

I had the exact same thing.

Look at the thread "Unusual tire wear pattern". Lots of ideas there.
