Source for Teak or Bamboo

I am looking to build my own floor rack for the bathroom in our 21, but I cannot seem to find a source for teak or bamboo. Can anyone recommend a source that sells planks of either of these for a home hobby enthusiast?

I have a couple of planks of teak left over from building my last boat. I knew the price of teak had gone up a lot but a few days ago I saw a quote for some teak. The price per board foot was stunning. I'm thinking that I might have to build a safe room for my planks. If I decide to use them for a project I'll probably cringe when I cut them.

You might be better off looking for a ready made teak grate. I think that some folks have found them and cut them to fit. Bamboo would likely be a lot cheaper.

Good luck.

The Hardwood Centre in Albany might have what you're looking for.

We've been using this for the last five years or so and it is a great fit and has held up really well.https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/c/b...RoCKe4QAvD_BwE

And a short drive from Salem - Thanks! And thanks to all for responding. Ron was right, the prices are painful, but it gives me the opportunity to custom size one that I also want to make about an inch or inch and a half taller than is typical.

Adding an edit here - I just got off the phone with the Hardwood Centre in Albany and they carry a wood called "Iroko" which they claim can be used like teak, but is much less expensive. I'll head down there in a few weeks to check it out.

For bamboo, you may want to check with a flooring supply company. I believe there's an "LL Flooring" (formerly Lumber Liquidators) in Salem OR; they sell bamboo plank flooring that may work for your project.

Hm, surprised if they have real bamboo. I've seen a lot of laminates in that place. Rather easily scratchable laminates, too, IMO.

In double checking, "LL Flooring" products appear to be bamboo veneer (not laminate, but still not a good choice for a bathroom floor mat). However "CaliFloors" does sell solid bamboo floor planks that may be a better choice. https://www.califloors.com/product-j...ing-7004001900

That’s too big for a 5.0 bathroom, isn’t it? Looks nice!

Could be; check the dimensions though. We origianlly had the BB&B teak one that is slightly smaller that is still shown on their site & was a bit small for our bathroom floor.

See if you have a Woodworker's Supply in your area. They will carry Teak but i drought that they will carry bamboo. Bamboo is laminated I am not sure if it will hold up in the shower. Teak is by far your best choice. I have a plank that I was going to use on my sailboat years ago. After you get over the sticker shock on teak you might get in touch with me. Not sure what shipping would be. There would be plenty to do a couple of those projects.

A much cheaper alternative so far has held up . Acaia wood is a tropical hardwood. I had trim the corners to make it fir on my Bigfoot but certainly appropriate sizes can be obtained

I think I'm going to go with Iroko wood, also known as african teak. It is still somewhat expensive, but nowhere near the cost of actual teak. Looks like I can get enough to do what I want for just a few dollars more than buying a good quality one pre-made, except it will fit like I want it to and be a bit taller. Thanks to all!

I don't know about the price but I have seen Ipe wood used on boats instead of teak. It is a Brazilian hardwood. Very hard, dense and a bit oily....probably ideal for a shower mat.

I bought mine from Walmart on-line for about $40 and cut about 1/2" on the sides using my BIL's table saw so that it fit. perfectly. Still please a couple of years later.

Just a note of caution. Read a post about someone who put a teak floor in the bathroom and ended up cracking the shower pan in the corner when it bounced around on some rough roads.
