Step Height

I need to call upon the beautiful minds of the Escape community. I recently took delivery of a new 21C with a high lift axle. I ordered the double step option. My problem is, the distance from the trailer to the first step is too large. I’m looking for suggestions to remedy this problem.

I’ve done nothing with ours since I’m okay with it, but a couple of removable blocks with non skid could work attached with wood cleats or wing nuts or something should work. There are lots of ways you could securely attach removable risers to your existing steps. If you don’t make them removable, your steps won’t fold and slide back in. Don’t forget some kind of non skid whatever you do. They could be made of many materials like plastic, wood, aluminum etc.

You could check and see if you could raise the whole two step assembly up by cutting an inch or two off the top of the vertical metal part that bolts on to the trailer angle iron. You could do it with a $15 Harbor Freight Angle Grinder and redrilling the holes. Or if you're not mechanically inclined you could have a local metal fabricating shop do it..

You need to make sure there would be room for the steps to slide in and make sure you don't cut into or have the trailer angle irons block the curved track section.

There are a number of three step variants available from eTrailer and Camping World. You might find one that bolts up easily.

I think I'll try this.

Hi Bill
If you don’t have an angle grinder I’ve got one time and borrow and plenty of metal cutting discs. Let me know

Thanks Dave. I appreciate the offer but I have one. I'll show you the results at Thomson.

Raise the upper step some

I cut a 2x8 to the shape of the top step. I put a couple of screws into the bottom so it wouldn’t slide around. This made the two steps closer to equal.

You need to check that it will fold back in before you cut. When I did my custom 2 step there was no way it would clear the body of the trailer. The only way around this was to make the lower step detachable.

You can see what I did here in this post:
