Many Pines Campground on Hwy 89 in the Lewis and Clark National Forest is a nice stop on the way down or back. No hookups but only $10 per night. Nice couple as camp hosts as well.

Not that I saw. Grades are up to 10%. East to west direction is recommended by some gurus on the internet (I would agree). Some very nice and uncrowded forestry campgrounds along the way.
