I finally decided to install them downside up. The pivot point is the same and I had to drill only one hole in each arm.

Can you use the hole that you drill for the pivot rivet ?

No need. The rivet goes in the same hole wether you swing the clamp up or down for storage. See the pictures I posted.

I was real scientific. I just tried bits until it matched the other hole. I will check however. I did drill a smaller pilot hole first since the final size wants to bounce around on the aluminum. I will post the actual bit size.

Tim,
I just did the same upside down mounting of the clamps on our 21.
This worked fine for the rear support however the deflapper attached to the front support has the knob just 1mm away from the outside wall of the Escape. A bit to close for my liking so I'm now searching for a thinner knob or will remove the knob and nut durning travel
