Biking

Hello Glenn
Although I am no longer riding bicycles regularly I am a fervent booster of all of the great things we have in my home state of Iowa. To that end, I have obtained a limited supply of the Iowa bicycle map. They are the 2019-2020 version as I have not been out and about to obtain any updated issues but still relevant. I have my remaining few in the Highlander and one has your name on it. See you in about three weeks. There are other avid cyclists in this fine group of people including our leader Paul. Thanks Paul for your insights for Glenn.

At 76, I'm not sure I can live up to a bike map of the entire state of Iowa, but I'll appreciate having it. An e-bike has revitalized my pedaling, but I don't see a Ragbrai in my future.

Have any past Rally attendees dined at local places they would recommend to others? Bars, or restaurants? We're going to arrive a few days prior to the rally. We're thinking we'd like to try some local fare, and help out the local economy. Any recommendations?

Poopy's.....I've not been there.....yet.

I don't know a whole lot about it, but on a week day it may be fine. I've been told the food is good. Fall weekend, good weather & it may be packed with bikers and slow service.

There's a normal reluctance to go to dive joints. In South llano, Texas, we went into a sketchy looking dive that was recommended by a ranger to avoid, but the only one existing & open in that smudge of a village. We were winter car camping nearby and wanted to see some of the Superbowl game. Busted glass abounded in the parking lot, dark funky interior, and there was a free buffet of food set out. The Packers were playing, and once some folks learned we were from Wisconsin, we were warmly welcomed, fed and feted. Missing teeth in a few of the patrons, misspelled tattoos, but all of no matter......we had a swell experience. And the Packers prevailed, but I'm a BEARS fan.

Ya never know.

How about Poopy's for lunch or dinner? Savana has a few attractions worth re-investigating to boot.

About - Poopy's

We've gone with Thoer and Mary Mac to Galena for a meal. OK meal, and things to see in that quaint and old tourist trap.

Hello Steven
Gotta have a great breakfast if you’re out hunting propane. Looking forward to the rally, the Poblanos
and the Cortinas are coming on. Gotta keep those hornworms in check. They have quite an appetite.

I hear........

"Gotta keep those hornworms in check. They have quite an appetite."

I hear they're tasty, roasted on the barbie. They taste kind of like billy goat, I'm told.
Salud!

Poopy’s in Savanna. There is only one time of day to see Poopy’s. That is bar closing time. They start up the Harley that is on the back bar. No, it is not exhausted outside. Yes it is loud.

I like the food chain technique. Hornworm eats pepper leaves, fisherman picks off hornworm and puts him on a 6/0 circle hook and throws him in front of a brush pile, catfish eats hornworm. Fisherman reels in catfish and enjoys catfish dinner.
Leopard frogs are hot bait right now.

I don't think my "bike" would be appropriate at Poppy's. My bike has pedals one has to crank.

Time for an upgrade

Forget that Neanderthal bi-cycle stuff. it's time for an e-bike for you. A 3 or 4 wheeler should be considered. And plop that bugger up on the bar, at closing time, and burn some rubber. No gas mask required. An N95 mask is suggested.

And WHAT, OH WHAT, is our intrepid rendezvous organizer, manager and administrator Paul doing in Poopy's at closing time? Curious minds are wondering.
How would he know this tidbit of Savana, IL lore?

Like a lot of unfortunate Americans he was flooded out and sought high ground and provisions. Probably deciding on another tattoo design Schwinn or Raleigh, Maybe a Super Mondia or Peugeot?

Naw...

No floods reported in Janesville, WI recently. Where did you get that notion? Mild drought conditions in that vicinity.

I was referencing the time the Corps of Engineers were recruited to pump the water out of Paul’s site at Thomson a couple years ago. I think somebody was singing their rendition of this classic

Hey Paul Braun, you do have a map of the USA somewhere with states colored in that have sent representatives right. I’ve been to Deming and took the diagonal highway over to the interstate. At night so couldn’t see much. First night pulling our 19 out of Tucson.

Hey young man what’s in the sock.
It’s nothing officer, I’m just keeping a baby bottle warm for my little girl.
