Does the storage facility have insurance? I would think it's their responsibility to clean up.

I rented a storage facility for about six months to store a car. The list of items I needed to sign initial for what the facility was NOT responsible for was extensive. Fire, theft, damage and on and on.. read the contract.

Not THAT car.

Your'e right, some storage businesses make you sign your life away. A friend put some quite pricey stuff in one place while they were renovating their home. All the expensive stuff was stolen in a break-in. Storage place denied any responsibility. His home insurance company said too bad, so sad.

Explained to him that his home insurance had a "goods temporarily removed from home" clause. Ended up with $5,000.00. One of the reasons I'm never quite sure that any claim will be honored.

WOW how awful. I'm glad I went the buy used cargo trailers off cl, & keep on my property. Sell when done. I did it more for the, you load once & back right up to door to unload.

Had 6 at one time.

The Storage Facility owners are responsible for the structure. The renters are responsible for their contents. It’s in the original contract. This seems pretty standard in the different facilities where I have rented in the past. I spent an hour on the phone with my insurance company and the trailer is covered under its auto policy (comprehensive) and the personal items are covered under my homeowners policy. However the damage was so minimal it didn’t meet my deductibles so no claim filed.

The owners are cleaning another unit and I will move into that one later this week. I am the first of many “dominos” as they clean and move people. They are very proactive and trying to help. Really good people. This business is their livelihood. We got one months free rent for our troubles so that’s something.

Just a quick update. The owners power washed and cleaned an empty unit three doors down from mine. I moved my remaining items to the new unit. So we are complete! They are now cleaning other units and allowing others to swap their old unit and move into a clean unit like we did. No update on the cause of the fire.
