replacement canopy is too long

Hello all,
Our 2013 Escape 17B is in the shop having some repairs done including canopy replacement on the Carefree Fiesta awning. It is a 10 ft awning with an extension of 8 ft. Our repair guy says that the original had an extension of only 6 ft. He's offered to take the canopy to a local place and have it cut to the proper length. I'm questioning whether ETI had to cut the canopy on site to fit their specs in the original build? Or did our repair guy order or receive the wrong item from Carefree? I hate to have a brand new canopy cut to fit if there is another better answer. Does anyone have experience in replacing their canopy and run into something similar? Thanks!

Not to create even more confusion but early Escape manual awnings typically had a 7' extension.

my 21 also has a shorter-than-normal awning... this is, I believe, due to the curve of the legs. it was replaced with one that is a foot too long by the POs, so when fully extended, it is still wrapped another turn or so around the drum. the downside is, I can't use the extra track in the drum to hang accessory decorations such as a light string.

if you contact Carefree, they should be willing to accept a return of the new awning cover in exchange for one that is the correct length, I've found hteir customer service to be quite good.

An extra foot makes sense because 8’ extension is standard for Carefree and it wasn’t ordered properly. Carefree will do custom configurations in 6’-6” or 7’ based on their website. The OP should be very cautious about having the awning fabric cut down to 6’. That is not what was provided by Escape as standard and it is not a size that Carefree even seems to make. A call to Escape should confirm that the extension is 7’.

Problem solved, I hope. The bulk part # given to me by ETI meant nothing to Carefree. But a serial number on the awning tube/drum brought up the exact configuration (width, extension and Escape part number). The extension is 6'6". Guess that includes the valance flap hanging down. Ordered it and will have it by end of January. Hopefully it will fit perfectly! Thanks for all advice! Really appreciate the helpfulness of this community! Happy holidays!

Nice job getting it figured out. All the early Escape brochures I’ve seen seem to say 7’ extension but it appears there are exceptions!

Our 2015 Escape 17 has the same: 6'2" from trailer to drum, and then a 4" valence. Looks like it would be wise for me to record that part number (if I can find it on my awning).

Sounds like an important piece of info each of us should document. Where is this serial number found? TIA.

Most excellent, THANKS! I've captured the image and will check (and document) during Spring de-winterizing.

We received the replacement canopy yesterday, an unexpected quick turnaround! We unboxed it, spread it out on the floor and measured it. It seems to be just right! Our repair guy said he would install it the day before we leave on next our next venture in mid-March.

Thumbs up

Thank you for this thread!

I contacted Escape about replacing the fabric but the information they had for the awning was not searchable on the Carefree site. The serial number on the awning drum does work. I ended up having to call Carefree to have them walk me through the options for ordering the awning. It's important to note that the serial number does not contain the length of the awning and that is one of the selections you need to enter on the order page. On my 2010 it was also 6'6" length to the end of the valance.

I also had to speak with a Carefree rep, who couldn't help much until I found the serial number on the drum/cylinder. That made all the difference in identifying the correct product. We received it in about 3 weeks or less and just had it installed a couple days ago. Our camper fixer fellow actually made a house call to do it! It is the correct width and length and fits perfectly. Now we're off to Hunting Island SP in SC for an early spring week at the beach!

Just ordered replacement fabric tonight. Noticed a lot of dry rotted stitching so it’s only a matter of time. Interestingly the length is 7’ to the edge of the valence on ours. Width between the center of the awning arms is 12’-3” which matches what shows up when I entered the serial number on the Carefree site. They cut the fabric 10” less in width so what comes should be 11’-5”. Be careful as you can choose to enter this as width between awning arms as I did or the actual fabric width. They have various acrylic fabrics for more money but stuck with the vinyl since it has lasted over 10 years. If you get the single sided “Shale Fades” pattern you will want the weathergaurd ( about 18” strip along the trailer) to be white. Came to about $350.
