Wild horses?

Wifey and I want to find the wild horses/mustangs running on the BLM lands out West. Nevada seems to have a few herds. Anyone with advice on where to find the critters anywhere out West and any camping nearby?

We have feral horses northwest of Calgary. People cannot get close, but there are certainly lots of photos. Most are beautiful creatures.

Horses are actually not wild in North America, they are all from released stock, thus my use of the term feral. I know, I know, I'm silly.

BLM "Wild" Horse Herd Management Areas

The BLM manages wild horses and burros in 177 herd management areas across 10 western states. Each HMA is unique in its terrain features, local climate and natural resources, just as each herd is unique in its history, genetic heritage, coloring and size distribution.

Browse herd management areas by state through the link below.

https://www.blm.gov/programs/wild-ho...nagement-areas

There are also a few herd areas on National Forest (USFS administered) lands in the US.

I belong to a couple of photography Facebook groups. I'm not a photographer, I take pictures. BUT, I love to look at others photographs. The groups: Lost in Oregon and Pacific Northwest Photography.

Anyway, this was posted yesterday at Pacific Northwest Photography about the Kiger Mustangs here in Oregon. I love the Steens, it would be worth the trip and lots of cool camping too

There are plenty all over the desert right here in Northern Nevada. And all kinds of free BLM campgrounds...what I usually do is go to a local BLM office for info, for example there's a great one in Winnemucca that can help you out...along with a nice free campsite right there called Water Canyon. Long story short, they are here and you don't have to do much planning because you can get all the local info and campsites with no reservations once you get to NV.

They are all over the West. Anywhere around Rocks Springs Wy. They even have tours you can take outside of town.

If you go South of town on Hwy 191, you can combine it with a trip to Flaming Gorge on the Green river. World class fly fishing, beautiful scenery and lots of horses. Excellent camping too.

A few years ago a friend and I stopped for a late lunch in Death Valley Junction, CA. A small herd of horses crossed the road in the middle of town through gaps in the fence on either side. When we went inside the cafe I told the proprietor that someone's fences were down. She said no, the gaps are on purpose; the horses are part of a wild herd that goes in a big circle during the day and passes through town in early afternoon.

How do you tell a wild ( feral ) horse from a domesticated range horse without getting close?

You can't, even if you're close, unless perhaps the domestic horse has been branded (or it's wearing something like a halter).

By definition, if a domestic horse escapes and runs around free, it's feral... just like a pet cat or dog that gets out and stays out is a feral cat or dog. Of course people are probably expecting feral horses to have been born out of captivity, but the number of generations out of captivity (even zero) doesn't change whether they are feral.

Rode a horse for a week on assignment in Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Provincial Park in northern BC. I now have no affinity for horses and horses can never atone for the abuse i took.

Horses

We see them every time we are in the southern sector of Teddy Roosevelt National Park, along with deer, elk, turkeys and some up close and personal views of the Buffalo. The Buffalo are especially predominant in the northern sector.

Bighorn Canyon NRA offers some good opportunities for wild horse viewing. While hiking several of the popular trails we saw wild horses out and about. The Horseshoe Bend campground was nice and quiet during our mid-week stay. Some sites have utilities. The canyon is spectacular and was a pleasant surprise.

Often times it is no shoes, open sores, nursing, proud or brazen behavior. They do not usually look like domesticated horses.
