I've missed Jim's daily meal posting and just learned why. Hoping he'll be up to reading all of these messages soon.

So sorry to hear about your operation, Jim! Many prayers for healing and a return to the joys of cooking!

This is the latest update on Jim. On August 6th he had a cardiopulmonary arrest event. While in ICU recovering from the Whipple procedure a separate incident occurred where a major artery burst. Nearly all of his blood was pumped into his stomach. The extraordinary efforts of the medical staff are the reasons why he is still alive.

He may be moved from ICU today. That said he is extremely weak, vulnerable to any number of conditions which could cause a setback.

He sleeps much of the time. He is not fully cognizant of his surroundings nor does he have the capacity – yet – to rely on short term memory to put the pieces of his life together. Of course this is all connected to having not one but two major operations; the drugs, incubation, and so on. The technical term for what Jim is going through is, “ICU delirium”.

His road to recovery will take a lot of effort on his part. It is entirely possible that he will be admitted into a nurse-care facility for the first phase of recovery. The second phase may involve shifting Jim over to a rehab facility.

Noelia related one amusing incident however where she was talking to a nurse. She mentioned that they like to camp and have this great trailer. That they go to these rallies all over the country where people own the same trailer. ‘Where do you go’? The nurse asked. ‘Well there is this place in British Columbia. ‘Right off hand, I can’t remember the name of the campground’. ‘Sorry everything is such a blur right about now’, Noelia said.

‘Osoyoos’ Jim replied with his eyes closed.

What a tough journey - and SO good to hear that camping, and Osoyoos, in particular - penetrated that ICU ‘fog’.
The guy knows what he likes, just the thing to help him pull through. Sending such warm thoughts, and prayers.

So in relation to what you just said I have to agree. I am on a roll in the stock market. I've made some money. Big deal. I got to thinking about Jim and actually a few other of my close friends who all have life threatening health issues. Everything you work hard for or skew your interests around - it can all go poof just like that. Good health like you said trumps everything else.
