So spent most of today putting a ceramic protective coat on our new trailer. Bit late in the year I know but we’ve only had it a month. Spent a lot of time researching covers (stupid expensive for a decent one in Canada). Decided to try a ceramic coat for our first year. Figured that protects the trailer year round, unlike a cover. It’s super slick now! Should be easy to keep clean, and has year round UV protection. Will see how it goes. I used the Glidecoat Marine ceramic coating.

That looks wonderful!

As does the blue sky. I didn't think you got those in Nanaimo.

Pay me now, or pay me later

I understand your reluctance to acquire a cover. They are a major PITA to put on a rig. But they do protect the rig from UV degradation (a significant factor in deterioration of exposed plastic items and gel coat). That old golden solar orb is an unshielded fusion reactor and dang powerful.

The cover can also protect from bird droppings, insect staining and leaf tannin discoloration. There are benefits to employing one, and costs.

And I'm always skeptical of "miracle in a can" products. The ceramic wax may be pretty good stuff, but a super thin film doesn't provide the same amount of UV/physical protection as a fabric cover.

The vertical stains on the cover I used are from walnuts. I previously had my rig stored in a lot next to woods and parkland. Lots of walnut trees very nearby.

YMMV

Well guess I’ll find out about the UV protection. I’d argue though the greatest need for UV protection is during the summer…when the cover presumably isn’t on.

I used a true ceramic liquid (v. expensive) product which creates a sealed hard surface. I’m going on the basis this provides year round protection, unlike a cover. It’s super slick so should make cleaning/upkeep a lot easier. Time will tell I guess.

All of the above, plus lot's of rain mixed in to make green algae

A lot depends on a person's location.

I cover whenever not in use.

From the image above, you can see leaves on the tree in the background. Summertime. I recently acquired a Summer cover which is smaller, lighter and quicker to deploy. The image shows the heavier and larger Winter cover.

Of course, do whatever works for you. Lot's of folks don't like the effort to deploy the cover. Me too. But I have learned & acquiesced to the fact that "having fun is a lot of WORK".
And so it goes.

Canopy!

I got a used Calmark cover for our Casita, which I used for a couple of years. Then I got a canopy.. It was about $300, and it works winter and summer: keeps the snow off, and the tree junk.

It's 20'x10', so our Escape 21C just barely fits under it, but it does. Backing it in over the yard is tricky, but we do it, and it's a lot easier than a cloth cover—and less work than waxing, too.

I'd post a photo, but we're parked at daughter's house 640 miles from home, and I don't have quick access to my photo files.

Cost 25% less than the E19. 50’ X 60’ with 16’ walls with partial eave lights. 3 people doors, 2 12’w x 14’t doors, 1 10’w x 12’t door (which is where Padawan lives), and 1 12’w x 10’t door. Not everyone has the space. Something like Iowa Dave has could be done for a lot less if it’s feasible on your property. I realize not everyone can do that.

I'd love to see pictures of this, exterior and inside. I have a couple acres here, and have been thinking of some sort of workshop space that doubles as a garage.

Well to quote the ceramic product blurb…

‘ SUPER HYDROPHOBIC LAYER REPELLS DIRT, WATER, STAINS & MORE -the ingredients of our Glidecoat Marine Ceramic Coating form an impermeable hydrophobic layer which wards off any dirt, water, UV Rays and other sources of corrosion.’

I’ll report back in a year!

the most important thing before applying any sort of ceramic coat is to first use polishing compounds on the whole surface to remove ALL surface impurities.... if the surface is oxidized, use a cleaner compound, then a polishing compound before the ceramic sealant this is best done with a buffer wheel.

I don’t really have any pictures of it. Maybe I’ll take some sometime. It’s just a pole barn with a gravel floor. I had part of it laid out for double walls and isolated footings to build a recording studio, but a prime spot came available, so I filled in the foundation work, and left it as is. The plan is to make part shop, part audio space, and part craft room since Barb has a long arm quilter. That’s down the road as I just haven’t had time to get to it. I am closing the studio to focus on live sound, trouble shooting, system design, acoustic treatment and teaching classes. So, maybe I can begin work on it in a year or so. Right now it has storage, boat, trailer, lawn equipment, one truck, and my observatory dome in it. Nothing fancy, but also not expensive. Less than $10 a square toot.

John, not sure what you really need for pictures. I have heavier spec’d trusses due to the original intent for the building. Also the back half of the building is double layer 3/4” OSB where the studio was originally going to be. The trusses are 4’ OC, although many AG buildings are 8’ OC, but I don’t like that. Let me know if you need something else.

I'd like to convert my canopy into a carport (trailer-port), but I'd probably have to get a building permit, and the infernal 'Conservation Commission' likely won't let me build anything within 200 feet of the river.

We should move to Kansas.

I live out in the country in Osage county, Kansas. It’s a double edged sword. You need a cheap building permit, but there are no building codes. On the other hand, there are no building codes. You need to know what you are doing.

yeah, anything over 6x10 feet here requires a building permit with county planning. ditto permits for electrical and plumbing hookups.
